  Influência de galectina-3 sobre a infecção de células trofoblásticas humanas (linhagem BeWo) com as cepas RH e ME-49 de Toxoplasma gondii, Projeto certificado pelo(a) coordenador(a) Eloisa Amália Vieira Ferro em 23/10/2012., Descrição: A toxoplasmose é uma das zoonoses mais comuns causadas por parasitos e apresenta distribuição mundial. Embora, na maioria das vezes, a infecção por Toxoplasma gondii é assintomática em indivíduos imunocompetentes, a transmissão materno-fetal causa uma das formas mais graves de infecção por esse protozoário. Uma vez que estudos delineando a soroprevalência mundial de T. gondii em mulheres grávidas mostraram altas taxas de soropositividade em vários países, torna-se relevante o desenvolvimento de pesquisas para ampliar nosso conhecimento sobre os mecanismos envolvidos na passagem transplacentária desse parasito. Galectina-3 é uma lectina importante na interação entre células e entre células e componentes do meio extracelular, bem como em mecanismos de infecção por diversos patógenos, entretanto, até o momento presente não há estudos sobre o envolvimento de galectina-3 nos processos de transmissão vertical do T. gondii.   Alterações funcionais induzidas por células trofoblásticas em monócitos infectados por Toxoplasma gondii, Projeto certificado pelo(a) coordenador(a) Eloisa Amália Vieira Ferro em 23/10/2012., Descrição: As células mielomonocíticas de linhagem THP-1 (human acute monocytic leukemia cell line) foram isoladas do sangue periférico de uma criança com leucemia monocítica aguda e constituem uma linhagem celular com propriedades semelhantes aos macrófagos derivados de monócitos humanos. Células trofoblásticas da linhagem BeWo são células humanas derivadas de coriocarcinoma e que apresentam propriedades morfológicas e bioquímicas semelhantes às células trofoblásticas humanas.
