Sergio Rossi
I am a research scientist specializing in marine natural resources, zoology and biological oceanography. My primary focus is on global change indicators of stress in coastal benthic populations, marine invertebrate distribution, ecology and physiology, benthic-pelagic coupling processes and marine wildlife conservation.I have extensive experience in coordinating field work and experimental design, as well as coastal monitoring programs. My leadership is demonstrated not only in the accomplishment of project objectives and publication of manuscripts, but also through the advisement of PhDs and post docs. My present lines of research related with Marine Biodiversity and Global Change can be synthesized as: 1) Studying the role of environmental and biological factors of the water column on the distribution, nutritional condition and survival of benthic organisms to increase the knowledge and tools for coastal management.

PELD Semiarid coast ? How climate and global change affect the socio-ecological Systems? , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / DE OLIVEIRA SOARES, MARCELO - Coordenador.

Planktonic calcifying organisms in a high-CO2 Mediterranean Sea (CALMED) (CTM2016-79547-R), Descrição: Unprecedentedly fast, human-derived fossil-fuel burning has elevated atmospheric CO2 with largely unknown impacts to surface ocean organisms. While warming and acidification have produced some observable changes globally and regionally in a physical and chemical sense, associated changes to planktonic calcifying organisms at the base of marine food webs and ecosystems remains very poorly understood. In particular, coccolithophores (phytoplankton), foraminifera and pteropods (zooplankton) that form CaCO3 shells have been demonstrated as particularly, puzzlingly, and potentially sensitive recorders of such combined influences. Furthermore, the Mediterranean Sea has been recognized as a global climate change ?hotspot? whereby regional impacts are expected to be especially profound throughout the 21st century. Much knowledge is missing however on the nature of pre- versus post-anthropogenic change throughout the W. Mediterranean in particular, and the CALMED projects aims to fill these important and glaring gaps with new studies on these 3 major classes of marine calcifying plankton. We will explicitly test the hypothesis that human-induced climate change since the mid-19th century has already borne detectable changes on these plankton groups that are observable through their assemblage compositions, mass and morphometry, and seasonal cycling of both former aspects plus geochemical tracers. CALMED exploits a ?top-down? approach in the broader Mediterranean basin, including the NE Atlantic as a form of ?background?, by examining water samples, sediment traps, surface sediments, and down-core sediments dating back several centuries into the last millennium. This combination should enable a temporally- and spatially-scaled assessment of the major planktonic calcifying groups under the influence of diverse Mediterranean physical oceanographic and associated geochemical influences and features, plus a greater understanding of marine biodiversity changes of the same organisms through a critical time period. The findings should ultimately contribute critical knowledge on a number of outstanding issues in the Mediterranean Sea, which is widely-recognized as especially sensitive to a range of global-scale influences but yet at the marginal sea (or basin) scale.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / ZIVERI, PATRIZIA - Coordenador.

Socio-Economic and Ecologic participative Scenarios for an adaptation to Environmental Global Change: the artisanal fisheries of Costa Brava (NW Mediterranean sea.) case study. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Coordenador.

Seasonal variation of waste as effect of tourism BLUE ISLANDS (INTERREG MED. Ref Nº 20161127), Descrição: The Mediterranean region is the world's leading tourist destination. In the summer season, due to the annual tourist wave, mediterranean islands host a far greater population. This is beneficial for the local economies, but it also places a great burden on the local infrastructures, especially for waste management systems. BLUEISLANDS will address common challenges faced by MED Islands, as: 1) the structural constrictions of sea locked territories, in terms of resources and waste management; 2)the fragmentary knowledge of seasonal variation of waste generation; 3) the lack of strategic plans to promote sustainable tourism. BLUEISLANDS Project brings together 14 partners from 8 countries in a systematic effort to properly identify, address and mitigate the effects of the seasonal variation of waste generation on MED islands as an effect of tourism. The issue has been a vexing problem for years but it has never before been approached methodically: The quantity and composition of waste generated over a twelve-month period on nine MED islands will be measured and the correlation between the quantified waste generated and both the number of tourists and the presence of litter in the coastal environment will be examined. At the same time, the existing waste management structure and followed respective practices will be assessed. Based on the report prepared from the results derived from all nine islands a multidimensional tool will be formulated, encompassing action plans, through which this common problematic phenomenon can most effectively be addressed. Over a following twelve-month period the tool will be implemented with selected action plans for each participating island, while the efficacy of each action plan will be evaluated. Eventually, a final report entailing all derived data and experience will showcase the most efficient and successful ways to turn a difficult and burdensome issue for MED islands? communities into a means fueling the establishment of circular economies while preserving and perpetuating sustainable tourism to the Mediterranean.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Coordenador / Alkis Stavridis - Integrante.

Mediterranean Sea Acidification in a changing Climate (MedSeA, agreement 265103), Descrição: Increases of atmospheric CO2 and associated decreases in seawater pH and carbonate ion concentration this century and beyond are likely to have wide impacts on marine ecosystems including those of the Mediterranean Sea. Consequences of this process, ocean acidification, threaten the health of the Mediterranean, adding to other anthropogenic pressures, including those from climate change. Yet in comparison to other areas of the world ocean, there has been no concerted effort to study Mediterranean acidification, which is fundamental to the social and economic conditions of more than 130 million people living along its coastlines and another 175 million who visit the region each year. The MedSeA project addresses ecologic and economic impacts from the combined influences of anthropogenic acidification and warming, while accounting for the unique characteristics of this key region. MedSeA will forecast chemical, climatic, ecological-biological, and socio-economical changes of the Mediterranean driven by increases in CO2 and other greenhouse gases, while focusing on the combined impacts of acidification and warming on marine shell and skeletal building, productivity, and food webs. We will use an interdisciplinary approach involving biologists, earth scientists, and economists, through observations, experiments, and modelling. These experts will provide science-based projections of Mediterranean acidification under the influence of climate change as well as associated economic impacts. Projections will be based on new observations of chemical conditions as well as new observational and experimental data on the responses of key organisms and ecosystems to acidification and warming, which will be fed into existing ocean models that have been improved to account for the Mediterranean´s fine-scale features. These scientific advances will allow us to provide the best advice to policymakers who must develop regional strategies for adaptation and mitigation.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / ZIVERI, PATRIZIA - Coordenador.

Effects of Climate change in Polar Shallow benthic Ecosystems (ECLIPSE, Fundación Total-Fina), Descrição: Antarctic marine benthic communities have been described as rich and diverse , both are comparable and even higher for some taxonomic groups than in temperate and tropical regions . Besides, Antarctic benthic communities (in soft and hard bottoms) present some unique features since they are dominated by suspension feeder?s organisms (mainly sponges, ascidians and cnidarians) and posse?s complex three-dimensional structures. These characteristics are not found in the vast majority of marine benthic ecosystems and are nowadays almost restricted to hard bottoms and reefs. It has been hypothesized that this particular structure of Antarctic communities could be due to the absence of hard skeleton predators; the limited action of sedimentation processes during glaciation - deglaciation periods and to the absence of riverine and aeolic input of sediments that can severely affect suspension feeders groups . However, the current process of Global Warming, particularly in the Antarctic Peninsula, can threaten this image of diverse and unique communities. Changes in the environmental conditions of the Antarctic have been detected in the last decades, especially the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) has been defined as a hot spot of global warming, with the highest surface air temperature increase in the southern hemisphere: 2,5 °C over the last 50 years, and among the highest in the world (mean warming trend of 0,6 ºC) . The atmospheric warming trend seem to be still not transferred to the Antarctic marine environment since there is up to date no real evidence for a rise in coastal seawater temperature . However, the glaciers on the WAP and the nearby islands showed direct responses to the increase of air temperature, as the rapid retreat of glacier fronts, break-up and disintegration of ice shelves, and speed-up of inland ice masses . Two hundred twelve (87%) of the 244 marine glaciers and associated islands of the Antarctic Peninsula, have shown overall retreat since 1953. Changes produced in coastal waters as result of the glacier retreatment (e.g. increase of inorganic matter input of terrigenous origin, fresh water run-off, ice calving, ice-free new benthic locations) are factors that strongly affect benthic and pelagic systems. In Potter Cove (King George Island, WAP) , changes in the taxonomic composition of benthic communities has been detected, and those changes are been linked to increasing sediment rates originated by glacier retreat . The megabenthic communities, which presented a complex three-dimensional structure dominated by epibenthic suspension feeders, show nowadays a shift to a community dominated by groups typical for soft bottoms, as infaunal filter feeders, predators, scavengers or necrophagous. At Potter Cove long-term data on several environmental variables (air and water temperature, salinity, total particulate matter, organic matter and pigments, reviewed in Wiencke et al, 1998, 2008) are available and the effects of glacier retreatment (as a consequence of climate change) are being assessed in the frame of the international and interdisciplinary ESF Program IMCOAST. Our group is associated to this program and responsible for the benthic communities study. In this context ECLIPSE can act as scientific platform increasing the present potential of our research group contributing to improve the current knowledge of coastal Antarctic Ecosystems and Global Warming effects.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / FUENTES, VERONICA L. - Coordenador.

Larval fitness as a key factor in the population dynamics of gorgonians BENTOLARV.

, Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / Orejas, Covadonga - Coordenador.

Climate change in Antarctica: a benthic-pelagic coupling approach in the Weddell Sea (CLIMANT). POL 2006-06399/CGL, MEC, Descrição: Ice shelves appear as sensitive indicators of regional climate change since their retreats coincide with a consistent warming trend in mean air temperatures (Vaughan et al., 1996). In 1995 the sections A and B of the Larsen ice shelf at the eastern Antarctic Peninsula collapsed and rapidly disintegrated uncovering thousands of square kilometers of continental shelf (Vaughan et al., 1996; Skvarca et al., 1993, 1998, 1999). Since then, a few expeditions have investigated the area and partially surveyed this recently opened ecosystem (Domack et al., 2005a). First results showed microbial mats of chemoautotrophs and patches of clams near vent openings coexisting with recently deposited ice rafted material of several textures and diatomaceous fluff (Domack et al., 2005a, 2005b). Apparently, this picture is the result of the new conditions at the sea surface over that area favoring the melting of icebergs and flourishing of phytoplankton. Presumably, these conditions will lead to an increment in the flux of ice rafted debris and phytoplankton detritus that may bury the fragile chemotrophic ecosystem in the near future. Further south, Larsen ice shelf C presents evidences of thinning and threatens to collapse as sections A and B, probably sometime in the present century (Sheperd et al., 2003). As air temperature continues to rise and climate changes, unique Antarctic ecosystems dwelling below ice shelves remain under danger of extinction. Based on the idea that climate change forces the environmental characteristics that ultimately modify the ecosystem, here we attempt to determine the actual environmental characteristics of the area formerly covered by the Larsen ice shelves A and B and identify their relationship with the organisms and the new ecosystem under development. To accomplish our task we propose a multidisciplinary study on the pelagic-benthic coupling in the recently opened area. The study will be complemented with a comparison between this ?new? environment and the situation at the southeastern Weddell Sea shelf, where typical high-Antarctic open sea conditions host one of the highest benthic biomasses in the Antarctic Ocean constituted by communities with high diversity and complex structures (Gerdes et al. 1992; Gutt and Starmans, 1998; Teixidó et al., 2002). In addition, we want to investigate the fate of benthic shelf communities after long glacial periods, which is one of the key processes scarcely explored in Antarctic research. To investigate the origin and evolution of high Antarctic biota, the opening of this new area represents a unique opportunity to study re-colonization processes through comparisons with the high Antarctic. Several Institutions will assembly an international group with young scientists participating in the analysis of physical, chemical, biological and geological characteristics of the ice, the water column and the seabed during the spring-summer season. The outcome promises to provide insights into the understanding of how Antarctic ecosystems may change under climatic pressure and the origin and evolutionary history of Antarctic shelf ecosystems. This information is particularly interesting in a moment when recent environmental and ecosystem changes at the Antarctic Peninsula presumably still present an early state of development and the threat over the ecosystems under ice shelves grows. The researchers on board will be in close connection with basic, primary and secondary schools through a web page based on an ongoing educational programme hold by schools, foundations and the Catalan Government. This web page is of general access and its contents aim to reach the general public. The page will be accessible for several years (for further details see http://www10.gencat.net/dursi/antartida, http://www.icm.csic.es/icmdivulga). In addition, a new web page with similar purposes is under const. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / ISLA, ENRIQUE - Coordenador.

HERMES: Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas. Contrato Nº 511234-2 . Specific Targeted Research Project, Octubre 2004- Septiembre 2008. UE, VI Framework Program, Descrição: HERMES is designed to gain new insights into the biodiversity, structure, function and dynamics of ecosystems along Europe's deep-ocean margin. It represents the first major attempt to understand European deep-water ecosystems and their environment in an integrated way by bringing together expertise in biodiversity, geology, sedimentology, physical oceanography, microbiology and biogeochemistry, so that the generic relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning can be understood. Study sites will extend from the Arctic to the Black Sea and include open slopes, where landslides and deep-ocean circulation affect ecosystem development, and biodiversity hotspots, such as cold seeps, cold-water coral mounds, canyons and anoxic environments, where the geosphere and hydrosphere influence the biosphere through escape of fluids, presence of gas hydrates and deep-water currents. These important systems require urgent study because of their possible biological fragility, unique genetic resources, global relevance to carbon cycling and possible susceptibility to global change and man-made disturbances. Past changes, including catastrophic events, will be assessed using sediment archives. We will make estimates of the flow rates of methane from the geosphere and calculate how much is utilised by benthic communities, leaving the residual contribution to reach the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas. HERMES will enable forecasting of biodiversity change in relation to natural and man-made environmental changes by developing the first comprehensive pan-European margin Geographic Information System. This will provide a framework for integrating science, environmental modelling and socio-economic indicators in ecosystem management. The results will underpin the development of a comprehensive European Ocean and Seas Integrated Governance Policy enabling risk assessment, management, conservation and rehabilitation options for margin ecosystems.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / GILI, JOSEP MARIA - Coordenador.

CENSOR: Climate variability and El Niño Southern Oscillation: Implications for natural coastal Resources and management. Specific Targeted Research Project (INCO-2002-A2.2) Marzo 2004- Abril 2008. Contrato Nº 511071. UE, VI Programa Marco, Descrição: Marine biodiversity and the sustained exploitation of marine resources are significantly influenced by ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) particularly affecting the coastal zone of the Humboldt Current upwelling system. Both its warm (El Niño: EN) and col d (La Niña: LN) phase have drastic implications for the ecology, socioeconomy and infrastructure. Local artisanal fisheries represent a major activity for the domestic economy, in consequence a huge amount of studies (published/unpublished) exists aiming a t identifying effects of EN. However, most processes and mechanisms causing these effects have not been analyzed. Especially artisanal fisheries and coastal invertebrate and fish populations suffer from EN effects. CENSOR aims at enhancing the detection, c ompilation and the understanding of EN and LN effects on the coastal zone and its resources, to mitigate damage, better use beneficial effects, and thus improve the livelihood of human coastal populations. Therefore, CENSOR is expected to be of high econom ic and social interest. A multidisciplinary approach, including Latin American and European specialists, aims at developing a comprehensive picture illustrating the response of the upwelling ecosystem to ENSO. Coastal benthic communities, pelagobenthic exc hange processes, riverine input and resource variability will be compiled and analysed comparatively. Aquacultural demands to compensate and decrease EN dependence in coastal fisheries will be addressed. Integrated database information will enhance the und erstanding of mechanisms and processes related to life strategies, species interactions and genetics. As one strategic point, indicators to predict EN events will be elaborated. We will improve the understanding of ecophysiological demands explaining shift s in resource availability, aiming at a better fishery management. Results will be made available at various society levels, including scientists, stakeholders, decision-makers, and coastal human communities.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Coordenador / Sven Tahje - Integrante.

European gelatinous zooplancton: mechanisms of jellyfish bloom formation and their ecological and socio-economical effects (European Project EUROGEL), Descrição: Repeated losses in the aquaculture industry due to mass occurrence of jellyplankton, technical problems in fisheries and industry due to jellyplankton clogging, and economic losses in tourism due to jellyplankton occurrence, are examples of problems with significant negative socio-economic consequences. Till now very little research has been oriented towards these problems, and we believe that the problems could be handled much better if we could explain the biological/ecological mechanisms behind mass-occurring events. There is an emerging attitude among scientists that jellyplankton have increased globally in the last decades, but proofs are lacking and explanations are merely anything but speculations. Our effort in this project is intended to improve the possibilities of handling such problems properly.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / Francesc Pagès - Coordenador.

Mediterranean gorgonians: risks evaluation of a valuable natural patrimony. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Integrante / GILI, JOSEP-MAR''A - Coordenador.

Monitoring of precious coral Corallium rubrum populations in the Catalan Coast. Regional Projects with EU funding (PCC: 30103), Descrição: The Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum, L. 1758) is a slow-growing longevous gorgonian that produces a red calcium carbonate skeleton, which is in high demand by the jewellery industry. Its long history of intensive commercial harvesting has resulted in a well-documented decline of its stocks throughout the Mediterranean, becoming especially apparent during the last two decades. Based on the extensive ecological data from the Costa Brava (NE Spain) stocks, this study reviews, for the first time, socioeconomic aspects and the impact of current fishing practices on the red coral population structure and reproductive biology. A comparison of the intensively harvested populations in shallow water with that of the infrequently harvested ones in deep water, along with a population in a marine reserve as well, reveals that 98% of all shallow water colonies show a juvenile size and branching pattern as a result of harvesting. Recent data on the reproductive biology of the species show that 91% of the colonies in shallow water populations (<60 m depth) are not 100% sexually mature. These populations are clearly at the limit of their recoverability potential. The maximum sustainable yield (estimated using the Beverton-Holt model) is reached at an age of first capture of 98 years, although the current regulations allow harvesting of approximately 11-year-old colonies (corresponding to a basal diameter of 7 mm). The presented data reveal how this renewable resource is being exploited in a clearly non-sustainable and inefficient way, changing significantly the underwater landscape of the Mediterranean coast. The review of all available data suggests that the shallow water stocks are depleted. Furthermore, recent trends in poaching of juvenile colonies and mass mortality events threaten the survival of the shallow water populations. A ban on reconstituted coral from the market appears to be the only option to control this form of poaching.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Sergio Rossi - Coordenador.
