Erwan Garel

I have obtained a PhD in Marine Geosciences in 2001 at the European University Institute for the Sea (Brest, France). After 2 years (2001-2003) of teaching, I have benefited from postdoctoral grants at the National Oceanographic Centre, Southampton (UK, 2003-2007), the Institute of Geosciences of Kiel University (Germany, 2007), and at the Algarve University (Portugal, 2008-now). I am specialized in hydrodynamics and sediment transport in coastal areas. My past research interests include: The morphotectonics of deep see domains and planet Mars; the impacts of marine aggregate dredging; erosion caused by deep-draft vessels; hydro-sediment dynamics of tidal sandbank; environmental Impacts of marine renewable energy farms. I am presently interested in elucidating water circulation dynamics and sediment transport at estuaries (wind-induced, density-induced and tidally-induced exchange processes between the estuarine system and the adjacent coastal ocean). My recent work concerns also the morphologic evolution of ebb-tidal deltas and their adjacent coast. In the SHORE project, I am presently studying the inner shelf water circulation along the south coast of Portugal. I am also responsible for an environmental monitoring station operating at the Guadiana Estuary.
