Cynthia Simmons

Possui doutorado em Geography - Florida State University (1999). Atualmente é Full Professor-Department of Geography - University of Florida. Tem experiência na área de Geografia, com ênfase em Geografia Humana e Desenvolvimento. Eu me considero uma geógrafa humana cuja linha de pesquisa aborda as interações entre desenvolvimento econômico e política ambiental. Especificamente, meu tenho interesse nas consequências dessas interações, e por isso muito do que atualmente estudo aborda questões sobre reforma agrária e conflitos por terra na Amazônia brasileira. Muito embora eu tenha me especializado mais na região amazônica, sobretudo devido a sua importância para manutenção de ciclos biogeoquímicos e por sua biodiversidade. Ela também conduziu pesquisas comparativas sobre as práticas de manejo florestal de agricultores indígenas e não indígenas na República do Panamá, a integração dos agricultores tradicionais de milho do México na economia alimentar global e estudos internacionais sobre desenvolvimento econômico, urbanização e sustentabilidade em China, Índia e Estados Unidos. Meu foco de pesquisa utiliza abordagens de política econômica. Particularmente a maneira pela qual os processos sociais interagem dentro de múltiplas de escalas (ou seja: indivíduo, localidade, regional, nacional, global) e subsequente impactos no meio ambiente local e nas condições sociais. A base teórica do meu trabalho considera a importância do espaço físico como fundamental para a compreensão de problemas sociais e ambientais que nele se desenvolvem. Analisar a origem de problemas que são inerentes à geografia necessita de estratégias metodológicas que combinam métodos qualitativos e quantitativos. Meu modo de pesquisa envolve principalmente o estudo de campo etnográfico e a aplicação de pesquisas científicas ao povo amazônico, incluindo trabalhadores rurais sem terra, pequenos proprietários, ativistas de movimentos sociais e ameríndios. Costumo trabalhar exclusivamente com os dados primários que eu mesmo coleto. Mas também juntei isso a informações de outras fontes - por exemplo, imagens de sensoriamento remoto - para desenvolver relatos abrangentes de ligações entre processos sociais como conflito de terras e mudanças na paisagem amazônica. Meu kit de ferramentas analíticas extrai-se de estatísticas, análises de discurso, investigação de arquivos e descrições densas, e minha unidade de observação é o indivíduo ou unidade familiar. Minha estrutura conceitual é fusionista na medida em que mesclo o teste de hipóteses voltado para a compreensão do comportamento humano com a economia política voltada para a descrição dos amplos contextos sociais nos quais os indivíduos agem. Embora minhas perguntas de pesquisa sejam sempre informadas teoricamente, procuro respostas pragmáticas úteis para os formuladores de políticas preocupados com a pobreza e a conservação.Em minhas pesquisas procuro integrar esses métodos através de aplicação de questionários em domicílios e com experiências e conhecimento adquirido em entrevistas com lideranças.
