Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr

My academic career started in 1988, when I began the undergraduate program in Oceanography at the Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in Brazil. I was introduced to water quality research during my time at UERJ and worked for almost three years under the supervision of Prof. David Zee, studying the water quality effects of submarine groundwater discharge in the Marapendi Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro. I graduated in 1994 and, after a sabbatical year to start a family, applied to the graduate program in Coastal Geology and Geochemistry at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (Brazil). Under the supervision of Prof. Zelinda Leao, I investigated the effects of submarine groundwater discharge on coral reefs from northern Bahia. After finishing my MSc in 1998, I moved to the University of Plymouth (United Kingdom) to work on a PhD. For my dissertation, I studied the changes in the benthic community structure of coral reefs in response to coastal eutrophication. My supervisors were Dr. Martin Attrill, Dr. Malcolm Nimmo, and Dr. Axel Miller. In 2002, after the conclusion of my PhD, I was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences (CFCAS). I moved to Nova Scotia (Canada) where I worked with Dr. Lisa Kellman and Dr. Hugo Beltrami (from St. Francis Xavier University) looking at CO2 production and storage in forested soils from Atlantic Canada. In 2003, a year after my move to Canada, I began my teaching career, as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at St. Francis Xavier University. I worked there until 2006 and, during these three years, I taught Principles of Oceanography, Health Impacts of Global Environmental Change, and Environmental Health. In 2006 I moved to the USA and joined the faculty in the School of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University, where I've been ever since.

Phytoremediation of nutrient pollution using floating wetlands, Descrição: The use of wetlands for bioremediation to capture and remove contaminants and nutrients is widely practiced around the world. Wetlands can improve improve water quality of stormwater runoff and manage watershed nutrients, as well as treatment of wastewater and other industrial contaminants. Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) or islands are small artificial platforms that allow aquatic emergent plants to grow in water that is typically too deep for them. Their roots spread through the floating islands and down into the water creating dense columns of roots with lots of surface area. The plants take up nutrients and contaminants themselves and the plant roots and floating island material provide extensive surface area for microbes to grow?forming a slimy layer of biofilm. The biofilm is where the majority of nutrient uptake and degradation occurs in a FTW system. The primary mechanisms for nutrient removal is transformation and uptake by microbes and plants, assimilation and absorption into organic and inorganic sediments, and converted into gas through volatilization. Aquatic plants, both above the water and submersed, take up and remove these elements from the sediment and water column into their plant material or biomass.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) / Mestrado acadêmico: (1) / Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / Zhaozhe Chen - Integrante., Financiador(es): Friends of Orton Hall - Auxílio financeiro / Ohio State Sustainability Institute - Auxílio financeiro.

Nutrient geochemistry in water and sediments of northern Beibu Gulf, South China Sea, Descrição: This study used depth profiles of excess 210Pb and 137Cs to determine the sediment chronologies and accumulation rates at four sites along the coast of Guangxi Province. This section of the Beibu Gulf extends along 1628 km of coastline, covering an area of approximately 129,000 km2. It is home to the fastest-growing development zone in China, and the central hub for the China-ASEAN economic cooperation strategy. Results show sediment accumulation rates (SAR) up to 800% higher than those observed in the 1920s, with most of the increase happening after 1970, coinciding with the increasing rate of urbanization and development in the region. The highest increase in SAR over the last century (+877%) occurred in Sanniang Bay, and the lowest rate of increase (+283%) in Lianzhou Bay. Total organic carbon (TOC) content in these sediments has also increased over the last 100 years, and current values (0.98?1.28%) are about 170% higher than historical concentrations (before 1970). Sediments are delivered to the coastal zone by five major rivers: The Fangcheng River, which drains into the Fangcheng Bay; the Maoling and Qin rivers, which drain into the Maowei Sea; the Dafeng and Nanliu rivers, which drain into the Lianzhou Bay.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / GUO, JING - Integrante / WANG, YINGHUI - Integrante., Financiador(es): Chinese Scholarship Council - Auxílio financeiro., Número de produções C, T & A: 2

Major and trace element geochemistry of lake sediments in Ohio, Descrição: Lake sediment samples were collected from 58 sites within Charles Mill Lake (north-central Ohio, USA) using an AMS 12 multi stage sediment sampler to retrieve a stratified sediment core. Each core sample is being used for analysis of organic matter content, carbonate minerals, texture and chemical composition (including trace, minor, and major elements). The analysis of this geochemical dataset will provide clues to the Holocene depositional history within the lake, as well as the main pathways and residence time of chemical contaminants in the lake ecosystem. By comparing the compositional data with the settlement history around the lake, we will be able to model the relationship between urban/agricultural development within the watershed and sedimentation rates within the lake. We will also be able to track the historical changes in the lake water quality, the speed of its aging process, and the impacts of changes between wet and dry seasons.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) / Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / MARTINS, VANESSA - Integrante / Ronny Sobreira Barbosa - Integrante.

Predicting the impacts of sea-level rise on the Amazon Macrotidal Mangrove Coast, Descrição: This study consists of a modeling exercise aimed at simulating the response of the eastern Amazonian mangroves to sea level rise, and identifying the intensity of landward migration and inundation for different IPCC scenarios of eustatic sea level rise. We used a spatially explicit model, based on cellular automata and Geographic Information System (GIS). The simulation considers 90 elevation events, from 0.01 to 0.97 m, for the time interval from 2010 to 2100. The highest elevation value corresponds to the most alarming scenario of sea-level rise in the AR5-IPCC, i.e. 0.97 m of global average elevation by 2100. Results of the simulation were used to map areas where mangroves did not keep pace with sea level rise and were inundated, as well as areas where mangroves were able to migrate landward. The area of mangrove at the start of the simulation (2010) was calculated at 4,180 km2, which corresponds to 20.3% of the study area. At the end of the simulation (2100), the original mangrove area was reduced to 2,916 km2, a loss of 30.2%. However, this loss of original mangrove area was compensated by extensive landward migration, which resulted in the addition of 1,585 km2 of new mangrove cover, for a final mangrove area of 4,481 km2, a net addition of 301 km2 of mangrove (a 7.2% increase). These results suggest that mangroves in the AMMC are very resilient and their adaptive capacity to SLR appears to be large. Soil accretion processes, through the production and accumulation of organic matter and the trapping and retention of mineral sediment, are likely the main sources of this resilience, as observed elsewhere. Two main factors facilitated the landward migration of these mangrove forests: The availability of a number of migration corridors at the margins of the many existing stream channels (created by large ebb currents) and the absence of natural or artificial barriers for landward migration. Studies done elsewhere in Brazil have also demonstrated how the rising post-glacial sea level invaded low elevation coastal areas and fostered mangrove colonization into these shallow and broad fluvial valleys.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) / Mestrado acadêmico: (1) / Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Integrante / D.S. Hydrodynamic controls on the elemental geochemistry of São Marcos Bay estuary, Brazil, Descrição: For this study, water samples were collected on 8 sites along the estuaries of the Bacanga and Anil rivers, which drain the island of Sao Luis, in northeast Brazil. The Anil River is a predominantly urban river, with reduced riparian vegetation. The Bacanga River runs through a state park with extensive riparian buffers for most of its course. The Sao Marcos Bay is macrotidal, with a maximum tidal range of 6.2 m during the period of study, and strong tidal currents that transport material to and from the estuary. Macrotidal zones are dominated by physical processes with large amounts of suspended material being reworked and transported within the estuary. This has major effects on biogeochemical processes.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / E.T.F. Physical controls on water quality of north-central Ohio lakes and reservoirs, Descrição: A recent national assessment revealed that almost a quarter of lakes and reservoirs across the lower 48 states are in poor biological condition, mostly due to high levels of plant nutrients (N and P). Due to their relatively long water residence time (compared with streams and rivers), lakes have long been recognized as systems where extensive denitrification and N burial can occur, reducing N export from watersheds. Improved understanding of the role that lentic systems play in watershed N removal can contribute to the development of future N management strategies. As such, assessing the physical and anthropogenic controls on the water quality of lakes/reservoir is a critical challenge for both environmental scientists and water resource managers. This ongoing study will evaluate the nutrient geochemistry of eight lakes and reservoirs in north-central Ohio, as well as the physical and anthropogenic factors controlling the spatial and seasonal changes on the nutrient dynamic in these systems. The surface area of the studied lakes/reservoirs varies from 28 to 1350 acres. They are nested in mixed-use catchments, with some being surrounded by parks, state forests, and wilderness areas, and others by cropland and developed landscapes.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / C. Environmental controls on the geochemistry of a constructed wetland, Descrição: Constructed wetlands (CWs) are built to meet a number of regulatory requirements, including compensatory mitigation for wetland losses, treatment of wastewater, and reduction of non-point-source pollution. In the US, they have been extensively used for wastewater or stormwater treatment since the early 1970s. Natural processes in the wetland stabilize the substrate, enhance permeability, remove organic, inorganic and microbiological contaminants and facilitate the flux of gases between the sediments and atmosphere. In addition, photosynthesis by algae increases the concentration of dissolved oxygen, affecting nutrient and metal reactions, and the plants' stem and root systems provide the necessary surface area for growth and adhesion of microorganisms, which facilitate the decomposition of organic material and the recycling of nutrients. This study was designed to evaluate the nutrient retention efficiency of a constructed wetland at the Mansfield Campus of the Ohio State University. The Riedl Wetland was built to mitigate the loss of stream and wetlands resulting from the construction of the Riedl Hall in 2005. The wetland is also used for stormwater retention, draining 190,000 m2 of campus uplands. The maximum depth of the wetland is 1.5 m, thought it can vary considerably by season. Removal efficiencies are higher during the summer (~40% removal efficiency) and lowest (~25%) in the fall. The removal efficiency also varied by nutrient species. Higher efficiency was observed in the removal of orthophosphate (65% in summer), while oxidized nitrogen (TON) had the lowest removal efficiency (22% in the fall). Despite the fact that removal rates for N and P in wetlands are temperature dependent (Kadlec and Knight, 1996), the temperature effects on Riedl Wetland were not very pronounced. Temperature effects explain only 39% of the variability on the inflow DIN values, but only 18% of the outflow DIN values. Similarly, temperature effects explain 49% of the variability on the inflow PO4 values, but less than 2% of the outflow PO4 values. While many other processes have been shown to influence the nutrient removal efficiency of a constructed wetland, this study demonstrates that variations in hydrology have a significant effect not only on the influx of nutrients to the wetland but also on the system?s ability to remove the influent nutrient more effectively. In addition, the study has shown that the nutrient removal efficient of the Riedl Wetland is relatively high for a system in the early stages of development. As it matures, its ability to remove nutrients will tend to increase, especially as the amount of accumulated organic matter increases and denitrification (the conversion of inorganic nitrogen into nitrogen gas mediated by anaerobic bacteria) becomes a significant contributor to N removal.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / G.A. Nutrient transport across a mixed-use headwater catchment in North-Central Ohio, Descrição: In many ecosystems on land and sea, the supply of nutrients is a key factor controlling the nature and diversity of plant life, the population dynamics of both grazing animals and their predators, and vital ecological processes such as plant productivity and the cycling of carbon and soil minerals. Over the last century, runoff from farms and cities, along with land cover and land use changes, have drastically altered the mass balance of nutrients in aquatic systems, affecting both their ecological functioning and the living communities they support. Here we present the results of a multi-year nutrient assessment of streams and lakes from the Mohican Watershed, in North-Central Ohio, which drains to the Ohio River and into the Gulf of Mexico. A total of 64 streams and 8 lakes/reservoirs have been sampled periodically since the summer of 2008. A GIS-based landscape model was used to examine the relationships between streams and their catchments. Land use data from NLCD was used to select representative reach-catchment areas in one of four categories: forested, developed, cropland, and pasture. Nutrient concentrations (NO2; NO3; NH4; PO4) were measured and used for calculation of nutrient fluxes within the watershed. Sampling was undertaken during both baseflow and stormflow conditions in order to evaluate the effects of precipitation on nutrient transport. In order to assess nutrient contribution from atmospheric deposition, rainwater samples were also analyzed. Our results show that nutrient fluxes are highly controlled by the land use of the reach-catchment and by precipitation events. In addition, there is a marked shift between local and external controls on biogeochemical processes under baseflow and stormflow conditions. During stormflow, nutrient input is primarily hydrologically controlled. During baseflow, biological processes dominate both the production and removal of nutrient ions from the stream. This short-term hydrological variability is compounded by the effects of long-term geomorphic and climatic changes, and an increase of over 15% in nutrient export was observed during wetter years.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / J.R. Multi-decadal changes in rainfall patterns and water availability in Ohio, Descrição: Over the past decades, numerous studies have improved our understanding of the relationship between climate change and the global hydrological cycle. These studies have detected remote associations between rising air temperatures and global precipitation, since a warmer climate spurs the evaporation of water, allowing the atmosphere to hold more moisture. As a result, wet places tend to get wetter and dry places get drier, increasing the risks of extreme weather events (e.g., floods and droughts). The recent IPCC report have suggested that these warming trends are likely to continue as average summer temperatures are projected to increase over the next few decades. These trends, however, are mostly framed within global or continental scales, and few attempts have been made to scale down these teleconnections and study its impacts at the regional and local scales. This project will contribute to this downscaling effort. Our results will help better understand the temporal and spatial variations on precipitation in Ohio, and provide support to managers about emergency preparedness to floods and droughts, as well as to farmers about water availability for irrigation and planning for water use.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) . , Integrantes: Ozeas da Silva Costa Jr - Coordenador / J.
