Taís Sonetti-González

I am a sustainability practitioner and transdisciplinary researcher with over fifteen years of experience designing and facilitating inclusive, multi-stakeholder processes across sectors, cultures, and continents. My work involves creating spaces for deep listening and co-learning, building trust, facilitating dialogue, and promoting epistemic justice to foster mutual respect and turn visions and dreams into meaningful actions for sustainable and more equitable futures. In recent years, I have co-led or contributed to international projects focused on sustainability transformations and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I have also helped coordinate intercultural initiatives, ranging from policy dialogues to arts-based workshops, culminating in the co-production of a multi-stakeholder action plan. I thrive in diverse, dynamic environments and am committed to connecting people, knowledge, and strategy to enable impactful, systemic change. As a postdoctoral researcher at UNICAMP with AmazonFACE Programme, I examine the science-policy interface from an epistemic justice perspective. My project analyses how scientific evidence is interpreted, mobilised, or contested in climate governance, and how diverse knowledge systems influence public decision-making. The goal is to foster more inclusive, reflective, and socially legitimate connections among science, policy, and society.

Powering Change With Justice - Weaving indigenous perspectives to uncover impacts of the wind energy transition, Descrição: Impacts of Wind Power on Indigenous CommunitiesTransitioning to renewable energy is a critical strategy for the societal transformation needed to combat climate change. Wind energy is expanding rapidly in the global green transition, but decision making lacks a systemic understanding of unintended social-ecological effects of wind energy plants across scales and borders, including in places distant from where such decisions are initiated.Wind energy disproportionately affects vulnerable populations including Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, and resistance to dispossession of land, also called green grabbing, in the rapidly expanding wind energy sector are increasing globally. In the Powering change project we will examine these unintended consequences of the wind energy transition, focusing on two cases where the expansion of wind energy is contentious and complex: Northern Sweden and North-eastern Brazil. We combine insights from creative and novel methods to better understand the local and global effects of the green transition, with a focus on wind energy. By weaving Indigenous and Western science knowledge, we identify entry points for a just and inclusive energy transition, calling for mutual and respectful dialogue across societies.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Taís Sonetti-González - Coordenador / Amanda Jiménez Aceituno - Integrante / Hanna Sinare - Integrante / Vanessa Masterson - Integrante / May-Britt Öhman - Integrante / Michele-Lee Moore - Integrante / Veronica Olofsson - Integrante / Ricélia Maria Marinho Sales - Integrante.

Supported the coordinator and contributed to both the scientific and operational dimensions of the XPaths project, acting as a project manager and research assistant. Responsibilities included literature reviews, drafting research protocols, and coordinating participatory methodologies to ensure the research could proceed during the pandemic. Also managed logistics, travels, documentation, and stakeholder engagement. The FORMAS-funded XPaths project focuses on co-designing inclusive pathways toward the SDGs, integrating diverse cosmovisions through transdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder processes.

During my tenure as a research assistant with the Amazonian Governance to Enable Transformations to Sustainability (AGENTS) project, I contributed to a collaborative effort aimed at identifying and amplifying grassroots initiatives that foster sustainable development in the Brazilian Amazon. The project, coordinated by Professor Eduardo Brondízio at Indiana University, involved a consortium of institutions, including the University of Campinas, the University of Colorado, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and the Stockholm Resilience Centre. My primary responsibilities encompassed conducting online semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders and organising the project's extensive qualitative data. These interviews were integral to documenting over 200 place-based initiatives across more than 900 localities in 174 municipalities, with a focus on areas such as agroforestry, sustainable fisheries, and community-based natural resource governance. The data I managed were pivotal in analysing the transformative potential of these initiatives and their contributions to biodiversity conservation and socio-economic resilience. This collaborative research culminated in the policy brief titled "Strengthening Place-Based Initiatives for Bottom-Up Sustainable Development in the Amazon," co-authored by an interdisciplinary team of scholars and practitioners. The brief emphasises the importance of recognising and supporting local initiatives as essential components of broader sustainability transformations in the Amazon.Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into the complexities of sustainability transformations in the Amazon, particularly the interplay between local practices and broader environmental governance frameworks. The project highlighted the importance of participatory research methodologies and the necessity of inclusive policy approaches that empower local communities in conservation and development efforts.

My PhD research focused on enhancing epistemic justice in participatory processes, aiming to co-produce knowledge for sustainability transformations in the context of the international project XPaths. Grounded in decolonial feminist and process-relational perspectives, the project explored ethical and inclusive ways to support the participation of Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Communities in Brazils Cerrado. It integrated their cosmovisions within a transdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder process, which led to the creation of an Action Plan for the region.

The project Transition to Sustainability and the Water-Agriculture-Energy Nexus: Exploring an Integrative Approach to the Cerrado and Caatinga Biomes (NEXUS), led by the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in Brazil, with support from FAPESP, is conducting a participatory process to develop sustainability scenarios and indicators for the Cerrado and Caatinga biomes at multiple scales (nexus.ccst.inpe.br).The participatory process of the NEXUS Project consists of a series of workshops with stakeholders representing different sectors of society in various geographic contexts, held between October 2021 and June 2024. The workshops employ the Three Horizons for the Sustainable Development Goals (3H-SDGs) approach, developed by researchers at the Stockholm Resilience Centre (Aguiar et al., 2019, 2020; Collste et al., under review), based on the Three Horizons method initially proposed by Sharpe et al. (2016). This document provides a summary of the method and the planned workshops.Throughout the process, 100 stakeholders from diverse sectors and geographic contexts were involved. The workshops produced a synthesis of convergences and divergences across scales regarding:Desired futures SDGs;Good seeds/initiatives of the desired future are already present today;Present challenges SDGs;Systemic understanding of root causes of problems;Obstacles, leverage points, short- and medium-term actions, and responsible actors.Based on these results, narratives of alternative sustainable future scenarios for different scales were developed and subsequently quantified using computational models by INPE and project partners, generating sustainability indicators for the different scenarios, which were presented in the final workshop in 2023. Other research projects will also utilise the results of the workshops.
