Vinicius Rocha de Morais

He holds a degree in Environmental Management from the Leonardo da Vinci University Center (2022) and a Postgraduate Degree in Environmental Education and Sustainability from the same institution (2023-present). He worked for 5 years as an environmental monitor for the State Secretariat of Environment and Infrastructure of Rio Grande do Sul (SEMARS), in the State Park of Itapeva (Torres/RS). Currently, he works as an assistant researcher for the Conservation Program Gatos do Mato Américas - of the Pro-Carnivorous Institute and coordinates conservation actions of the southern bush cat on the northeast coast of Rio Grande do Sul, through the project "Felines of Itapeva", with support from the Small Wild Cats Conservation Foundation (SWCCF) and the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (MbZSCF). It works especially with the Atlantic Forest biome of the extreme south of Brazil and with the species Leopardus guttulus. Since 2021, he has also served as an assistant researcher for the Tiger Cats Conservation Initiative (TCCI), which brings together researchers from North, Central and South America.

Conservation actions for the protection of the southern tiger cat in the extreme south of Brazil, Descrição: The objectives of this project are: (1) vaccinate domestic dogs and cats with access to protected area to reduce the chances of disease transmission to wildlife. (2) neuter domestic dogs and cats to reduce population size and eliminate the abandonment of domestic animals. (3) install signs on roads to warn of the risk of running over wild animals. (4) converting poorly made chicken coops into enclosures against wild predation. In November 2021, I was part of the Tiger Cats Conservation Initiative (TCCCI) working group that works seamlessly to conserve small tropical wild cats in The Americs. On all three continents, more than 20 conservation projects work to protect 7 species of wild bush cats in five different countries. In this important task we have the support of the Foundation for the Conservation of Small Wild Cats (SWCCF/USA).

In 2018 I started my academic internship at the Conservation Unit of Itapeva State Park. The following year, I held the position of environmental monitor in the performance of activities of social and environmental education, visitor driving and ecotourism. Together with the UC team, assistance in monitoring biodiversity with the use of trap cameras. In November 2021, with the help of the Park team, I created the first project for the conservation of the southern bush cat in the region.
