Biomassa vegetal como indicador de biodiversidade, Descrição: Levantamentos de padrões de distribuição e abundância da biodiversidade são necessários ao processo de tomada de decisões quanto à sua conservação, controle, uso ou simples monitoramento. A impossibilidade prática de se fazer o monitoramento de toda a biota em larga escala espaço-temporal faz com que comumente se busque substitutos ou indicadores biológicos para tal complexidade. Tais indicadores costumam falhar no papel de preditores de resposta das espécies a pressões antrópicas. Em função disso, o presente projeto de Pesquisa & Desenvolvimento tem por objetivo a viabilização do uso de biomassa vegetal como indicador de biodiversidade, tanto do ponto de vista de sua riqueza específica quanto de sua abundância real em nível específico e de categoria trófica. Possíveis discrepâncias de tais modelos (e.g., a floresta ?vazia?, onde espécies da fauna e flora tenham sido seletivamente exploradas) poderão ser detectadas a partir do levantamento de aspectos ligados à qualidade ambiental e à ecologia histórica do sítio em questão. Os produtos a serem gerados no presente Projeto de Pesquisa & Desenvolvimento são por isso inéditos, não tendo sido até hoje propostos para a área de conservação biológica. São também relevantes, pois permitirão um avanço considerável no processo de tomada de decisões quanto ao manejo da vida silvestre. The influence of land management on small mammals in agricultural landscapes, Descrição: Land use changes and invasive species are two of the biggest drivers in biodiversity declines throughout the world. In Australia, the majority of land modification and invasive species range expansions are consequent of the development of vast areas of land for agricultural grazing. As a result, populations of mammals within the small- medium weight range (15-5500 g) have suffered major losses in abundance and diversity. This study used fauna surveys and habitat assessments to investigate how land management strategies influenced native habitat structure and the subsequent response of small mammal populations. Surveys were conducted within two pastoral tenures managed for grazing purposes and two reserve areas with limited management input.
