Possui graduação em medicina pela Universidade de Brasília (1988) e doutorado em Neurobiology - The Rockefeller University (1993). Atualmente é Associate Professor - Oregon Health and Science University. Tem experiência na área de Neuroetologia, com ênfase em Neurobiologia Molecular, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: aprendizado vocal, processamento auditivo, memória e aprendizado, plasticidade neuronal, regulação de expressão gênica cerebral, neuroanatomia comparada, genômica comparativa, passaros canoros, beija-flores e psitacídeos.
