Possui graduação em Enfermagem e Obstetricia pela Universidade Gama Filho (1980), aperfeiçoamento em Licenciatura Plena pela Universidade Gama Filho (1980) e aperfeiçoamento em Habililtação em Enfermagem Médico-Cirúrgica pela Universidade Gama Filho (1980), especialização em Metodologia do Ensino Superior pela Universidade Estácio de Sá (1982), especialização em Administração e Gerência Hospitalar pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (1982), especialização em Residência em Enfermagem pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (1982), especialização em Enfermagem do Trabalho pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1986), especialização em Metodologia do Ensino e da Assistencia Enfermagem pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1987). Co-fundadora da Sociedade Brasileira de Enfermagem Oncológica -SBEO (1988). Tem mestrado em Enfermagem pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1990) e doutorado em Enfermagem pela Université de Montreal (2002). Atualmente é Professora Associada da Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, Toronto Metropolitan University, Faculty of Community Services, no Canadá. Tem ampla experiência na prática clínica, no ensino e na pesquisa em Enfermagem. Atua principalmente nos seguintes temas: Modelo Assistencial; Enfermagem em Cancerologia Clínica, Letramento em saúde (Health Literacy), cuidados de enfermagem e aspectos éticos na prática e na pesquisa de enfermagem. Linhas de pesquisa: Administração de serviços de saúde; Avaliação de Programas; Letramento em saúde funcional da família; Letramento em saúde; Representação transcultural do câncer de próstata. Tem parcerias internacionais e desenvolve colaborações científicas com diversas universidades no Brasil e no Exterior, dentre elas: Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Universidade de Brasília, Universidade Federal de Goiás, Universidade Estadual Paulista, Universidade Estadual do Ceará, Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia, Prefeitura da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade Estácio de Sá, Université Paris Diderot, Alliance of French-Speaking African and Mediterranean Leagues Against Cancer, Université Numérique Francophone Mondiale, Columbia University, entre outras. É revisora convidada e editora científica de diversos manuscritos em revistas no Brasil e no Exterior. Orienta dissertações e teses na Ryerson University, além de ser autora de diversos artigos e capítulos de livros. Ministra cursos de curta duração para técnicos de enfermagem, estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação de enfermagem. Participa de eventos científicos e apresenta trabalhos científicos em diversos países.
