Liriam Sponholz

Liriam Sponholz é livre-docente (Privatdozentin) pela Alpen-Adria-Universität em Klagenfurt, na Áustria e professora visitante na Faculdade de Comunicação da Universidade de Brasília. Depois de concluir seu doutorado na Universidade de Leipzig, foi professora na Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Senior Postdoc na Academia Austríaca de Ciências (OEAW), pós-doutoranda na Universidade Erfurt (Alemanha), professora visitante na Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) e na Universidade Complutense de Madrid. Suas áreas de pesquisa abrangem comunicação política online, teoria do agendamento (political agenda building), campanhas eleitorais online, populismo de direita, racismo, islamophobia e discursos de ódio.

Plurality of Voices in the Era of Uncivil Societies: Political Incivility and Online Misogyny in the Case of Dilma Rousseff on Facebook, Descrição: Social media transformed political deliberation and raised hopes to strengthen democracy by opening the gates of the public sphere to all possible kinds of themes and speakers. On the other hand, this media feature has been accompanied by political incivility and hate speech. So, what if people deliberate against democracy? And does this question pose a genuine concern? Previous studies, mostly from the Global North, show that online incivility is a random phenomenon, since most users? comments are civil. Moreover, researchers observe a difference between impolite comments (most common) and those that openly display threats to individual rights and to democracy. Although online incivility is a transnational problem, it gets on coloring Latin America, a region with a recent past of dictatorships, plagued by strong political polarization, huge social and economic inequalities and media systems coined by private concentration, rather undertaking political functions than mediating different positions. In such a context, due to the gate-breaching new media effected, online deliberation embodies hope of more plurality of voices and outlets like Facebook or Twitter are often perceived as paramount to ?alternative media?. However, incivility can frustrate such expectations, if people starts to ?deliberate? online against democracy. To which extend is such uncivil plurality coining online deliberation in these societies? This exploratory study aims to address this question with a content analysis of user comments (n=2547) on the government?s official Facebook site ?Palácio do Planalto? against the former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff weeks before her ousting from the post in 2016. The analysis focus on what kind of political incivility is observed, impoliteness (nicknames, name calling, attribution of predatory actions) or threats to individual rights and democracy (calls for violence). In line with previous research, outcomes show that the most common form of incivility is impoliteness. The debate is coined by a great deal of insults as aspersions, mostly personal attributions of predatory actions such as corruption and terrorism to the mandatary herself. These made up the context, where extreme incivility such as personal threats of death towards Rousseff are not only occurring, but also statistically quantifiable. Moreover, patterns of interaction vary according to the level of civility. Civil comments engage more, but open calls for violence also get likes. Such outcomes point to a highly polarized and uncivil debate, but also to the need to reconsider the empirical assessment of political incivility itself. Minorities at issue: Media and the agenda building of symbolic conflicts, Descrição: How do Refugees, Migrants, Muslims, Black People, Women, Homosexuals become source and object of media controversy? Due to processes as immigration, integration and emancipation of social groups, this question has taken on a crucial role. Societies are becoming increasingly diverse and must accommodate the most different value systems and life styles. The process of making from all these elements a whole - often called as integration - has been serving as a fruitful source for the media agenda, which in turn is made up of conflicts. The targeting of minorities as conflict sources through and in the media has been nurturing social desintegration and unleashing more conflicts, as in the case of hate speech. This project aims to analyze how a media agenda surrounding minorities is built and which results this brings: Who is targeting, who is targeted? How? Which media operational biases are leading to that and with which effect? Do such representations fit to the situation outsides the media? Does reality play any role in the media coverage on minority issues at all? Vienna's Mayoral Election and the Refugee Crisis on Facebook, Descrição: During the summer of 2015, many thousands of people fleeing conflict regions, particularly Syria, crossed European borders in search of international protection. Their main destinations were Germany and Sweden. The situation transformed Austria into the most important transit country in Western Europe, with its capital Vienna becoming a key focal point. At a potential turning point in the Western European political climate surrounding the refugee crisis, the Austrian capital held its mayoral election. The election offered an insight into this climate, insofar as it brought the various political positions on this issue to the fore. The refugee crisis stimulated public debate, and social networks took on the role of arenas in which everyone could express their opinion. The project attempts to analyse how this debate was conducted at this defining moment. What role did the refugee crisis play in Vienna?s mayoral election? Did the issue dominate the election campaign on social networks? How did the different candidates and parties appropriate the issue? Did political actors use the situation to push their own agendas or did the positions they took just follow the issue-attention cycles in the media? What was the key factor that stimulated participation on social networks? Entre consenso, opinião e tabu. As controvérsias midiáticas em torno de Thilo Sarrazin, Oriana Fallaci e James Watson, Descrição: Pode dizer-se publicamente que negros são burros ou que muçulmanos tendem a ser violentos (sobretudo, mas não só) com mulheres? Estas posições constituem tabus ou são apenas uma opinião entre outras? Quais são os limites de uma discussão pública quando se trata de diferenças entre grupos, biológicas (com relação a pessoas negras) ou culturais (no que se refere a muçulmanos)? A mídia na Alemanha reage de forma mais ?sensível? com relação a estas temáticas do que a de outros países? Estas questões devem ser analisadas a partir das controvérsias na imprensa nacional e internacional sobre as declarações de Thilo Sarrazin, Oriana Fallaci e James Watson. A pesquisa envolve jornais de circulação nacional de países da Europa e das Américas do Sul e do Norte. Nestes países, as communication cultures são marcadas por experiências diferentes com relação ao racismo: Portugal/Espanha e o colonialismo, a Alemanha e nazismo, os Estados Unidos e a segregação racial e o Brasil e a ?democracia racial?. Estas polêmicas são exemplares porque envolvem declarações às quais se atribui um caráter de naturalidade (self-evidence) (?Qualquer um sabe que??). Partindo da teoria das representações sociais (Moscovici) e com a ajuda das análises do discurso e de conteúdo, deve analisar-se: a) quais representações sociais de pessoas negras e de muçulmanos são objetos de discussão e quais são excluídas no decorrer da controvérsia, ou seja, tratadas como ilegítimas e b) quais estratégias a mídia e as suas fontes utilizam para continuar discutindo estas representações, ou seja, para apresentá-las como uma opinião legítima. Pressupõe-se que no discurso midiático não há mais consenso com relação ao racismo clássico . A questão é se a idéia de que diferenças sociais se devam ao fenótipo é tratada como uma opinião legítima ou não.
