Mario Gerla

Distinguished Professor Mario Gerla, UCLA?s Jonathan B. Postel Chair in Networking, is chair of the Department of Computer Science. He received an engineering degree from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and his Master?s degree and Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA, studying under faculty advisor Leonard Kleinrock. Gerla joined the UCLA faculty in 1976. His research focus is in the area of computer networks, including design and performance of wireless ad hoc networks; routing, multicast and congestion management in tactical networks; reliable peer-to-peer communications; and cognitive radio and spectrum sharing, with applications in vehicular networks, traffic management, and wireless security and privacy. He is the director of the Center for Autonomous Intelligent Networks and Systems, a multidisciplinary lab at UCLA Engineering, and the Network Research Lab. Among other honors, Gerla has been named an IEEE Fellow. He has served on several conference program committees, including the Association for Computing Machinery?s MobiCom and MobiHoc, IEEE?s MedHocNet and the Wireless On-demand Network systems and Services Conference (WONS). Gerla is on the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking Scientific Advisory Board. He became chair of the Department of Computer Science in 2015.
