Rafael e bacharel e mestre em Química pela Universidade de Brasília, e doutor em Quimica pela Iowa State University. Apos pos-doutorado no Departamento de Engenharia de Materiais da Iowa State University, tornou-se professor na Georgia Southern University, onde trabalha desde 2012.
