Improved community nutrition through pond culture of fish associatied with animal husbandry and gardens, Descrição: During a 3-year period, I was team leader for the Auburn University/USAID technical assistance to the government of Panama. Principle duties were: (1) Assist the Panamanian government select and survey sites, design, build, and implement 22 rural, integrated, fish pond projects. Located in some of the most impoverished regions in Panama, the livestock, fish pond, garden pilot projects determined the economic, nutritional, and social benefits to participants over a 2-year period. (2) Assisted in the collection of production and economic data from the 22 pilot projects for analysis of project impact. (3) Assisted with the organization and implementation of the Department of Technological Transfer within the National Directorate of Aquaculture. The department developed training programs for government fisheries extension persons and fish farmers. Over 200 rural farmers from 70 communities as well as 30 government extension persons were trained. I actively participated in these training programs while in country and prepared Panamanians to carry on after my departure. (4) Assisted in the writing, photographing and design of a large quantity of written (promotional and technical pamphlets) and audio-visual (slides, video film, flannel boards) materials used by trainers and extension persons in their efforts to advance Panamanian aquaculture. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Desenvolvimento. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (0) / Especialização: (0) / Mestrado acadêmico: (0) / Mestrado profissional: (0) / Doutorado: (0) . , Integrantes: Leonard Louis Lovshin Jr - Coordenador / R Pretto - Integrante., Financiador(es): U.S. Agency For International Development - Auxílio financeiro / Government Of Panama - Cooperação.

Improved fish production in the Northeast of Brazil through reservoir management and aquaculture, Descrição: During a 6.5-year period, I was project leader for the Brazil/Auburn University/USAID technical assistance aquaculture and fisheries development project. In this capacity I carried out the following: (1) Aided in the design and development of what is considered the outstanding tropical freshwater fish culture research institution in Latin America. The present installation contains 200 earthen and concrete ponds totaling 20 ha of water a 1,200 m2 laboratory, teaching complex, support installations such as warehouse, administration, food technology and net fabrication buildings, a housing complex for Brazilian biologists visiting specialists and students. The estimated cost of the completed research complex is $2,000,000 U.S. The Brazilian government consequently established a Latin American Fisheries Training Center at the research complex. (2) Assisted research scientists in the experimental design, literature search, and implementation of research in the areas of reservoir management, limnology, fishery technology, fish economics, fish diseases and fish nutrition. (3) Participated with Brazilian fish culture researchers in the planning and carrying out of 26 fish production experiments relating to: Demonstrating technical and economic feasibility of culturing the all-male tilapia hybrid produced by crossing the male Tilapia hornorum with female Tilapia nilotica. Over 10,000 kg/ha/yr of one pound fish have been produced using only vegetable protein in the form of agricultural by-products. The technology developed can be of use in most developing countries of the world. Screening 12 native fish species for culture potential. The research resulted in the first successful reproduction in the world of two species of fruit eating Amazon River fishes. Further experiments demonstrated that Tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum and Pirapitinga, Colossoma bidens have excellent culture potential.
