Christoph Müller
Possui doutorado em Ciência do Solo pela Universidade de Lincon (1995). Atua como professor de ecologia vegetal na Universidade Justus Liebig em Giessen na Alemanha e como professor visitante na University College Dublin. Suas pesquisas abrangem temas relacionados a ecologia de ecossistemas, uso da terra, manejo e conservação do solo, emissão de gases de efeito estufa e dinâmica de nitrogênio no solo. Participa do Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas (IPCC). Além disso, participa de projetos relacionados as emissões de óxido nitroso do solo em países como o Brasil.

Dinâmica de N em Terra Preta de Índio :um estudo para elucidar a fertilidade em Terra Preta de Índio, Descrição: A floresta tropical de terra firme abrange a maior parte da região amazônica e é predominantemente localizada em solos de baixa fertilidade química .A sobrevivência e a produtividade destes solos dependem da diversidade de plantas e reciclagem de matéria orgânica. No entanto, nessa região ocorrem solos com alta fertilidade. Esses solos denominados de Terras Preta de lndio (ADE) foram originados por povos ameríndios a aproximadamente 2000 anos. As ADE apresentam altos teores de P, Ca, Mg, Zn e Mg e matéria orgânica estável. Aparentemente , as ADE formam micro- ecossistemas estáveis mesmo quando sujeitas a agricultura intensiva. Por isso, as populações locais usam as áreas de ADE para o cultivo de culturas de subsistência como mandioca, milho, banana e mamão. Assim, a compreensão dos mecanismos responsáveis pela sua alta fertilidade e resiliência seriam muito importantes para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de gestão sustentável, aumento da produtividade e sustentabilidade da agricultura na Amazônia e outros agroecossistemas. Os ciclos biogeoquímicos, com destaque para o nitrogênio (N), são intimamente correlacionados com a produtividade florestal e da agricultura. Na região amazônica, há uma tendência natural nos ecossistemas de perda de nitrogênio na solução solo devido a lixiviação intensa, drenagem , e mecanismos de decomposição rápida .Nas florestas, a disponibilidade de N é geralmente alta e as mudanças sazonais na umidade do solo resultam em grandes emissões de N20 durante a estação das chuvas, enquanto na estação seca os fluxos de NO são maiores. Enquanto a estrutura das comunidades microbianas de ADE foram investigadas recentemente , o entendimento quantitativo da dinâmica da transformação bruta do nitrogênio foi praticamente inexistente. Deve-se ressaltar que as taxas de transformação bruta de N são importantes porque fornecem uma visão mecanicista e quantitativa de como ocorrem os fluxos de N, bem como os processos de retenção/perda ocorrem nesses sistemas .Além disso, os ciclos bioquímicas interagem entre si, e em particular nas relações entre C e N que produzem os gases de efeito estufa (GEE) como o C02, CH4 e N20. Assim, a presença de grandes quantidades de carbono em solos ADE elevam as preocupações a respeito das mudanças climáticas nas atividades microbianas e o aumento das emissões de GEEs.Deve-se observar que este será um dos primeiros estudos que combinam uma investigação detalhada das estruturas da comunidade microbiana (especialmente nitrificantes e desnitrificantes comunidades bacterianas) com a dinâmica das transformações dinâmicas brutas de N em solos de ADE. Assim, o principal objetivo deste estudo é quantificar as transformações brutas individuais de N (por exemplo, nitrificação, mineralização) e a associação às emissões de gases de efeito estufa, em particular N20 . Face2Face, Descrição: O objetivo desse projeto é avaliar como a agricultura da Europa Central é afetada pelas mudanças climáticas. Para isso, irá examinar os efeitos complexos do dióxido de carbono em plantas, solos, microorganismos e insetos. Isso será feito usando duas instalações de pesquisa de campo em larga escala: os sistemas de enriquecimento de dióxido de carbono do ar livre (FACE) da Universidade Justus Liebig Giessen e os sistemas FACE da Universidade Hochschule Geisenheim. Estes sistemas FACE permitirão aumentar a concentração atmosférica de dióxido de carbono em parcelas experimentais para um nível predefinido e assim simular condições previstas para o meio do século. Com base no conhecimento adquirido em seus estudos, os pesquisadores desenvolverão estratégias para a adaptação às mudanças climáticas ou para a mitigação dos impactos das mudanças climáticas. Dinâmica de Nitrogênio em Terra Preta de índio na Amazônia Ocidental, Descrição: O nitrogênio (N) é um nutriente fundamental na agricultura e nos ecossistemas naturais. Esse elemento também está relacionado com a emissão de gases de efeito estufa como o óxido nitroso proveniente da desnitrificação. Apesar de sua importância, poucos estudos foram efetuados sobre o ciclo do N em solos amazônicos denominados de Terra Preta de Índio. Assim, o objetivo desse trabalho será avaliar a dinâmica de N em Terra Preta de Índio na Amazônia Ocidental. Para isso, serão coletadas amostras de solo em diferentes municípios no estado do Amazonas. As variáveis analisadas serão a concentração de N mineral e N enriquecido, taxas de transformação (nitrificação, desnitrificação, amonificação e mineralização), estrutura e densidade das comunidades microbianas.
