  Men and Nature in the history of Western Amazonia. Financed by Academy of Finland 2005-2007 (172,000 EUR)., Descrição: While working in the Bolivian Amazonia in 2002 within the University of Helsinki sponsored archaeological project "The Inca Interests in Amazonia" our team was invited by the University of Acre (Brazil) to carry out an initial inspection of certain newly discovered sites there: they appeared to belong to the curious and so-far poorly known "geoglyph" type of which only few examples had been located before in Amazonia. These sites are round or rectangular ditched or walled enclosures, often in clusters of one or more and in some cases with individually varying inner constructional details. In some cases straight causeways connect and traverse neighbouring constructions. We have published a preliminary report on the sites together with Dr. Alceu Ranzi of the Acre University in which we set forth - adding certain historical and cartographical facts - a hypothesis of the demographic and cultural development in the western Amazonia before the Spanish intrusion during the middle and latter half of the 16th century. The key factors of our hypothesis are (1) a high but not excessive population and high production state combined with a well organized heterarchic societal system before the 14th century followed by (2) a steady and rather marked decline due to climatic deterioration and (3) the ensuing migrations of tribes and whole tribal clusters (notably the Guaranís and Panoans), and finally (4) a marked - almost catastrophic - demographic and economic collapse triggered by the Spanish intrusion and the European diseases (influence, measles etc) to which the Indians were not immune.   Formations and transformations of ethnic identities in the South Central Andes, AD 700-1825: A multidisciplinary study of tangible and intangible patrimony. A part of an international research project of CEISAL, Descrição: The heads of state and government of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union held their first Summit in 1999 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, committing to build a strategic biregional partnership in political, economic and cultural fields alike. During the same year, the European Commission and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, together with the Ibero-American Center of the University of Helsinki, planned the first Experts' Meeting of the signatory countries of the Rio Summit. This meeting, held in Tuusula, Finland, November 2 4, 1999, firmly recommended that the signatory countries of the Rio Biregional Summit Declaration promote comparative and multidisciplinary research projects on tangible and intangible cultural heritage from the perspective of longue durée, taking in account, among others, archaeological evidence, written and oral histories, live traditions and transformed identities. To further these recommendations, a number of specialists on Central and South Andean culture and history formed in 2001, in Lima, a working group called Patrimonio e identidad en los Andes

Financed by Finnish Cultural Foundation 2002-2005, Descrição: Los primeros cronistas españoles mencionaran regularmente que los incas memorizaban asuntos importantes de los pueblos y, en general, de la actividad estatal incaica, mediante el empleo de curiosos nudos atados en cuerdas coloreadas. De hecho, entre los pobladores andinos, estas cuerdas o khipus continuaron en uso común hasta 1583, año en que el III Concilio Limense decretó su total prohibición. Desde entonces, los estudiosos han venido discutiendo si el sistema de khipus constituía un tipo de escritura o era un mero sistema mnemotécnico. Sorprendentemente, en la discusión general sobre las características del khipu, muy poco es lo que se ha hablado sobre los textos que reposan en los archivos, los cuales-de modo verificable-están basados en los nudos y cuerdas referidos.   The Amazonian Interest of the Incas. Dir. by Ari Siiriäinen, co-director M. Pärssinen, four post-graduate students are participating in the project. Financed by University of Helsinki 2001-2003 (100,000 EUR)., Descrição: The research carried out by the Finnish group has mainly taken place on the harsh high plateau (3800-4000 m.a.s.l.) of northwestern and western Bolivia. An attention was directed towards the prehistory of the vast Amazonian rain forest region situated to the east of the Andean mountain range. A central reason for this shift of focus have been the studies of professors Pärssinen and Siiriäinen concerning the geographical extent and border politics of the Inca state (approximately AD 1400-1532). According to the traditional view, the Incas would hardly have ventured into the Amazonian basin. While studying 16th and 17th century archival sources, Pärssinen has, however, found mentions of large military expeditions and of the building of fortresses deep in the Amazonian rain forest. Other main objectives of the 2002 field season were to investigate more closely the ca. 600 m long ditch running in the southwestern and western parts of the Fortaleza area and to partially excavate the round montículo situated within the main complex of stone walls in the eastern part of the site. A group led by Jalkanen-Mäkelä carried out these tasks. Another objective was to clarify the dating of the montículo; in other words, to find out whether the stone walls and the overlying earthen construction are contemporary or not. Inside the montículo, virgin earth was not reached. At a depth of about 70-80 cm below the montículo's present surface, some interesting ceramic shards were found; among them a painted fragment of Inca pottery and some flat stone objects of afiladores de flecha , as well as some chert flakes.   Guide to Andean Sources. International project directed by Joanne Pillsbury, Descrição: Long-term project to inventory and discuss the accounts of the Spanish soldiers, clerics, and travelers who came to the Andes from the sixteenth century onwards, as well as the works of indigenous colonial-period authors. As the Inka and their neighbors had no tradition of alphabetic writing prior to the arrival of Europeans, these accounts form an important, but problematic source of information on Andean life. This project, known as the Historiographic Guide to Andean Sources, addresses the contributions and biases of these authors, and provides background information on their lives and works. The proposed three-volume set includes contributions by 122 authors, based in seventeen countries. The Guide forms part of the research program of the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, and has received additional support from the Getty Grant Program, the Andrew W.
