  Data and value-based decision-making for a sustainable land use, Descrição: The actual projections indicating significant regional and global climate change urge to invest in sustainable livestock production systems. Therefore, intensive grazing systems are being explored as an alternative to maintain ecosystems and enhance animal welfare. The project DaVaSus (Data and value-based decision-making for a sustainable land use) aims to test regenerative and multifunctional land use concepts for future farms, considering trade-offs between sustainability indicators such as soil and water quality, biodiversity, and economic criteria. Furthermore, the project focuses on assessing animal welfare in beef cattle by using modern sensors for data collection of physiological and ethological parameters, which are then correlated with management practices and environmental conditions. The project is being conducted at the experimental farm Gut Bösel in Brandenburg, Germany, over a three-year period until the end of 2025. The farm runs livestock operations with a beef cattle herd of 250 animals of Angus and Salers breed. The herd is managed under pasture year round, grazing on cover crops and under sown crops in winter. Pasture management intends intensive portion grazing, inspired by the mob grazing strategy, with at least one paddock rotation per day, intensive livestock density and short grazing time within a paddock, followed by long resting periods for each paddock. Each cow is fitted with a bolus sensor placed inside the reticulum to monitor the rumen temperature, rumination activity, drinking events, and activity behavior. Health and reproductive conditions of individual cows are monitored through behavior parameters recorded by the bolus, which are visually represented through informative graphs. Additionally, the animals are equipped with GPS neckband sensors, powered by solar energy, to monitor and remotely track the cattle in the paddock using virtual fences as an innovative approach for livestock management. This continuous monitoring provides real-time data of environmental conditions, and individual animal health and welfare, all conveniently integrated into a data-based platform. With high-precision sensors and advanced algorithms, the project will develop principals to predict potential animal welfare impairments and digital solutions to make sustainable land use concepts applicable to other farms in the future.   Efeito da suplementação de colostro nos índices de doenças nas primeiras semanas de vida de bezerros leiteiros -, Descrição: Para compensar o sistema imunológico imaturo de um bezerro recém-nascido, um suprimento adequado de colostro é de importância crucial. O cuidado intensivo de bezerros tem ganhado cada vez mais espaço nas investigações nos últimos anos. A qualidade do colostro, a quantidade e o tempo de alimentação após o nascimento são os fatores mais importantes que influenciam a saúde do bezerro nas primeiras semanas de vida. Neste contexto, o projeto tem como objetivo geral avaliar a quantidade e qualidade de colostro consumida nas primeiras horas de vida e correlacionar com os efeitos nos índices de doenças dos bezerros nas primeiras semanas de vida. O estudo será realizado em duas fases: Primeira fase será coleta de amostras de sangue dos bezerros aproximadamente 24 horas após a suplementação de colostro.   Influence of heat stress on vital parameters and milk yield of dairy cows housed in naturally ventilated barns in different climate zones, Descrição: Hence, the effects of heat stress on welfare, physiology and productivity of dairy cattle require the development of new techniques for adaptation to climate changes. The objective of this project is to evaluate the environmental conditions in naturally ventilated barns under hot conditions, and correlate between individual reactions on vital parameters of lactating dairy cows such as: respiratory rate, heart rate, heart rate variability and body temperature.   OptiBarn - Optimized animal-specific barn climatization facing temperature rise and increased climate variability, Descrição: The OptiBarn target is to develop region-specific, sustainable adaptation strategies for dairy housing, focusing on an optimised climatisation of naturally ventilated buildings. Naturally ventilated barns (NVB) are particularly vulnerable to climate change since the indoor climate strongly depends on the extremes and variability of the outdoor climate. Without sound adaptation strategies, increased climate variability will result in a sub-optimal thermal environment in many livestock buildings impairing production and well-being of animals. Appropriate construction methods and management of the buildings can improve the thermal control, provided that precise identification of factors affecting the thermal control capacity of the buildings under practical farm conditions is undertaken. In this context, indicators for an optimisation of livestock buildings under climate change will be developed in OptiBarn by: (i) Barn-specific assessment of the influence of outdoor climate on the indoor conditions, (ii) Region-specific risk analysis on how often extreme weather situations will occur, (iii) Monitoring animal-individual stress responses to the indoor conditions, (iv) Development of engineering solutions. (v) Modelling tools to assess environmental and economic cross effects of adaptation alternatives. In this context, close contact and exchange with experts from the industry, stakeholders and the scientific community is ensured over the entire term of the project by establishing an advisory board consisting of a stakeholder panel and a scientific panel.
