Supernova Distribution in Galaxies; Extra-Galactic Jets, Descrição: We report the presence of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the radio hotspots embedded in the diffuse emission lobes of about five active galactic nuclei (AGNs), selected from the data of Neff, S.G. et al. (1995). Symmetry analyses of optical counterparts of these sources were used to discriminate between SNRs and possible H II regions. The detections of these SNRs at the lobes of AGNs have far-reaching implications on the nature and morphologies of lobe-dominated extragalactic radio sources. We have used the presence of SNRs at the hotspots (and possibly along the jets) of AGNs to model an acceleration mechanism beyond the accretion disks of AGNs and we have attempted the explanation of the complex structures observed in certain lobes of AGNs which have since perplexed many scientists.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) / Especialização: (0) / Mestrado acadêmico: (0) / Mestrado profissional: (0) / Doutorado: (0) . , Integrantes: Marie Chantale Damas - Integrante / I E Ekejiuba - Coordenador / L P Johnson - Integrante / Luke Z Teng - Integrante., Financiador(es): Nasa Office Of Space Science - Auxílio financeiro., Número de produções C, T & A: 1 / Número de orientações: 1

Tropical Atlantic Climate Variability, Descrição: The main objective is to understand the physical processes which affect the Tropical Atlantic SST variability by conducting a heat budget analysis. Of the several components of the heat budget, the focus will be on the net surface energy flux. Tools: Two coupled ocean models will be used, the GFDL AGCO and the GISS AOGCM (coupled ocean-atmosphere). Model run B122 is being used. From this 112-year the geographic area of interest is 75 W 1 0E, 3 0S 3 0N, with the following variables extracted for the analysis: SST, salinity, EW current, NS current, EW wind stress, NS wind stress, fresh water flux and net heat flux. Fortran programs and PLTGKS plotting program are being used for calculations and graphic analysis. Tasks: Study the temporal variability by generating time evolution plots over 60 years in order to see on what time scales this variability occurs. Tasks: Study the spatial variability by making plots of the standard deviation of variability over model years 2003 to 2053. Locate the areas of largest variability. Tasks: Correlate the time rate of change of SST with the net surface energy flux to see how much of a factor this variable is in the SST variability. Time permitting; compare results with Josh and Errol's findings from their study of changes in sea surface pressure and the North Atlantic Oscillation. Such a regional comparison may improve our understanding of the extent and contributing factors to SST variability in this region of the world. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (2) / Especialização: (0) / Mestrado acadêmico: (0) / Mestrado profissional: (0) / Doutorado: (0) . , Integrantes: Marie Chantale Damas - Coordenador / Wilson Obi - Integrante / Ben Lewis - Integrante / Lisa Sarma - Integrante., Financiador(es): Nasa Goddard Institute Of Space Studies - Bolsa., Número de produções C, T & A: 2 / Número de orientações: 2

Modeling the Silicate Emission Feature in Cometary Dust, Descrição: Comet Halley displayed a strong 10 micro meter silicate emission feature, with a peak at 11.3 micro meter most likely due to crystalline olivine. To interpret the spectrum and assess the relative abundance of crystalline olivine, one needs a means of predicting the infrared emission as a function of grain properties. Particle shape strongly affects the spectrum near resonances such as the 11.3 micro meter feature. In fact, Mie theory calculations for spheres do not predict any feature near 11.3 micro meter. We are studying effects of particle shape and heterogeneity using the discrete dipole approximation method, in which the particle is modeled as an assembly of radiating dipoles on a 3-dimensional lattice (Draine, ApJ. 333, 848, 1988). Computed spectra will be compared for several types of non-spherical particles- tetrahedral, ellipsoids, and fluffy aggregates created by diffusion limited aggregation. This research was carried out at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with NASA. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (0) / Especialização: (0) / Mestrado acadêmico: (0) / Mestrado profissional: (0) / Doutorado: (0) . , Integrantes: Marie Chantale Damas - Coordenador / Marie C Damas - Integrante / Robert A West - Integrante., Financiador(es): Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory - Outra., Número de produções C, T & A: 1

Professional development of elementary school teachers in astronomy, Descrição: In order to improve the ability of in-service teachers to understand and to teach astronomy, we are proposing a summer workshop in 1998 for 15 elementary/middle school teachers who teach in minority districts throughout New York City. A Master Teacher will be helping with all activities of the workshop. Teachers will perform hands-on activities to learn topics of astronomy: moon phases, sun and seasons, star finding and constellations, and the solar system. Each activity will then be integrated to include other curricula subjects such as the arts, mathematics, social sciences, history, and others. Teachers will also explore related curricular materials available on the World Wide Web. The activities will be adopted from NASA's Educational Products and Project ASTRO/Astronomical Society of the Pacific. There will be many observing nights, a trip to the Planetarium and the City College of NY NASA Center. Teachers throughout workshop will work in teams and each will present completed project after each topic. At the end of workshop, participants will have a complete set of integrated activities. As a follow-up in Fall 1997, the principal investigator will visit each participant's classroom to assist in the implementation of teaching methods and materials. During Spring 1998, LIU will host an Astronomy Day Fair. The project will be evaluated using a variety of strategies. Pre- and Post - attitudinal surveys that use Likert scale items will be administered to teachers to assess perception of the value of the astronomy workshop, and practice of using astronomy in their classrooms. A sub-set of teachers will be interviewed to understand the interconnection of these views in detail. Teachers will also keep a daily log of their observations and thoughts in a journal. Data will also be gathered from the visit of each participant's classroom and the completed projects. Data analysis will involve both qualitative and quantitative methods. Redesigning the introductory level physics course for non-science majors, Descrição: The Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University is in downtown Brooklyn and serves mostly commuting students who live in the area. Nearly all undergraduates are first generation college students; 59% are of African-American and Hispanic origin; and 70% are women. Many are unprepared to succeed in the sciences. This population also includes prospective science teachers. An in-service teacher will be participating as a research assistant in this project. Our project is to redesign the introductory level physics course taken by most of the non- science majors, a population that includes a large number of education majors who are teachers in the New York Metropolitan area. The course will utilize current methodologies that support student-centered learning journal writing, ethnography, collaborative learning, and study skills. The project will have these objectives: 1) preparation of material for a student-centered, active learning course; 2) preparation of faculty to teach the course; and 3) enhancement of students' academic and personal self-confidence as future scientists, educators, and citizens. The course is being developed with the participation of NYC Alliance, an NSF-funded Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) Program. It will be disseminated to serve as a model and resource for other colleges. The evaluation method will include a Likert scale items survey responses, pre- and post semester attitudinal questionnaires, interviews of students, student grades on exam, quizzes, and laboratory notebooks and journals. The survey packet will also contain demographic items to capture both cultural and socioeconomic information. The Focus Group(s) will be used to observe group dynamic and discussions when students interact together. Data analysis will involve both qualitative and quantitative methods.
