Formation of Pores in Stretched Highly Viscous Glass-forming Liquid, Descrição: Elastic stresses may play a remarkable role not only at cooling of partly crystallized glass-forming liquids but also, as was shown in [1, 2, 3], at crystallization processes. The elastic stresses in crystallization are due to the differences between the densities of glass and crystal. That is the reason why the effect of elastic stresses is of great important for glass-ceramic manufacture. In general, this effect depends on the density misfit, the geometry of the samples, and the kind of crystallization. Similarly to dissolved gases and especially to cavitation processes in liquids, elastic stresses could result in the formation of pores. It is known that a glass of diopside composition (CaO?MgO?2SiO2) reveal only surface crystallization [4]. This fact can by explained by strong difference in the densities of diopside crystal and respective liquid, which amounts about 15%. The full crystallization of powdered diopside glass results in the formation of pores. The crystal density estimated via the density of glass and the average volume fraction of pores agree with that estimated by X-ray studies [5]. It means that indeed the main reason of pore formation is misfit of densities. Therefore, we choose this glass to study the nucleation of pores under action of stretch stress. Moreover we show also that the growth rate of crystalline crust does not change up to full crystallization [6] but at some moment of time a pore appears that resolves the potential effect of elastic stress on crystal growth rate. Indeed, rough estimates demonstrate that evolving elastic stress energy could exceed the limit of glass strength earlier than its effect on growth rate becomes remarkable. [1] J. W. P. Schmelzer, R. Re-examination of CNT in Connection with its Application to the Interpretation of Nucleation Experiment, Descrição: According to classical nucleation theory (CNT) based on Gibbs?s description of heterogeneous system both volume and surface thermodynamic properties of critical nuclei are considered as size independent. Therefore the thermodynamic driving force for the growth of macro crystals and its surface energy are usually attributed to the critical nuclei too [1, 2]. This assumption leads to the dramatic underestimation of steady-state nucleation rates if one considers surface energy as the temperature independent quantity [3]. The discrepancy between evaluated and experimental values of nucleation rate can be avoided if one assumes the slight growth of the specific interface energy with increasing temperature which may reflects the change of the critical size and hence the curvature of critical nucleus [4]. However this way leads to the values of surface energy very close to the experimental value for the proper liquid/vapor interface. This result conflicts with Stephan?s rule according to which the specific interfacial energy is proportionate to the enthalpy of the proper phase transformation [5]. In the case of the glass crystallization it is the melting and evaporation enthalpies. We plan to use for this aim our experimental data on crystal nucleation and growth kinetic in two silicate glasses with compositions of lithium disilicate (Li2O?2SiO2) and sodium calcium meta-silicate (Na2O?2CaO?3SiO2).
