A Framework for Efficient XML Keyword Search and Retrieval, Descrição: The main goal of our research is to devise a framework for efficiently producing ranked results for keyword search queries over large XML document collections. When running keyword-based queries over relational databases, it is clear that the result to be provided is a set of tuples in which attribute values contain the keywords supplied by the user. That is because in RDBMS, tuples are usually the basic objects sought by users. It is also common to have some sort of function for evaluating the relevance of each tuple in the answer with respect to the user query. With keyword-based search on the Web, entire HTML documents are usually returned to the users, ranked according to their relevance w.r.t. keywords at hand. However, evaluating keyword search over hierarchical XML documents, in comparison with relational data or conceptually flat HTML documents, introduces new challenges to be dealt with in order to obtain relevant results. Challenges: First, the scope of the keyword query is not always the whole XML document, but can be a nested XML element. In other words, the answers might include sub-trees in the target XML document collection which values contain (in their leaf nodes) the keywords supplied by the user. In addition, since XML keyword search results can be arbitrary nested elements, it is not clear how to decide on the granularity of the answers to be provided. Second, ranking the identified results remains a major issue. While tuples and entire documents are ranked in relational DB keyword search and Web search engines respectively, ranking has to be undertaken at the granularity of XML elements with XML-based search, since anything from a single leaf element to the whole document tree (root element) could be provided as answer. Thus, how to efficiently rank XML elements is still an open issue. Main Objectives: In this research project, we focus on the IR keyword search model, aiming to provide a keyword-based search system that is more adap. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Joe Tekli - Coordenador / Richard CHBEIR - Integrante / Agma Traina - Integrante / Caetano traina Jr - Integrante., Financiador(es): Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo - Bolsa.

GML Data Search and Retrieval, Descrição: GML is emerging as the new standard for representing geographic information, allowing the endcoding of structurally and semantically rich geographic data in self describing XML-based geographic entities. In this study, we address the problem of approximate querying and ranked results for GML data and provide a method for GML query evaluation. The main objective of our project is to develop a GML retrieval framework, evaluating both structural and semantic similarities in GML data, so as to produce approximate and ranked results. As a first step, we plan to investigate XML structural and semantic similarity methods. On one hand, we aim to conduct a detailed investigation on tree edit distance based methods for assessing the structural similarity between XML documents, as they are usually more precise than existing approaches and mainly target rigorously structured data (which is the case of GML). On the other hand, we will examine methods for evaluating the semantic similarity between lexical and geographic concepts [3, 4]. Consequently, we plan to introduce a hybrid method, considering both the structural and semantic characteristics of GML data in the similarity evaluation process. The second step of our work would be to propose a query formalism allowing the user to pose structure-and-content geographic with only partial knowledge of the GML data collection structure and semantics. Here, we would like to investigate different possible solutions, such as the use of a predefined query language (e.g., GeoPQL) extended toward our similarity measures, or the use of an interactive pictorial representation converted into GML. The third step of our project would be to implement an online prototype system which would allow us (as well as other researchers in the domain) to test and evaluate our proposed method, and compare it to existing approaches. . , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Joe Tekli - Coordenador / Richard CHBEIR - Integrante / Fernando FERRI - Integrante / Patrizia GRIFONI - Integrante., Financiador(es): Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - Auxílio financeiro / NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL OF ITALY - Auxílio financeiro., Número de produções C, T & A: 1

SOAP Performance Enhancement and Differential Multicasting, Descrição: The Web Services (WS) technology provides a comprehensive solution for representing, discovering and invoking services in a wide variety of environments, including SOA (Service Oriented Architectures) and grid computing systems. At the core of WS technology lie a number of XML-based standards, such as the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), that have successfully ensured WS extensibility, transparency, and interoperability. Nonetheless, there is an increasing demand to enhance WS performance, which is severely impaired by XML s verbosity. SOAP communications produce considerable network traffic, making them unfit for distributed, loosely coupled and heterogeneous computing environments such as the open Internet. Also, they introduce higher latency and processing delays than other technologies, like Java RMI and CORBA. The goal of this project is to investigate the existing techniques to SOAP performance enhancement. We particularly focus on the problem of SOAP communications, and aim to provide an improved SOAP multicasting solution. In fact, many approaches build on the observation that SOAP message exchange usually involves highly similar messages (those created by the same implementation usually have the same structure, and those sent from a server to multiple clients tend to show similarities in structure and content). Similarity evaluation and differential encoding have thus emerged as SOAP performance enhancement techniques. The main idea is to identify the common parts of SOAP messages, to be processed only once, avoiding a large amount of overhead. Other approaches investigate non-traditional processor architectures, including micro- and macro-level parallel processing solutions, so as further increase the processing rates of SOAP/XML software toolkits. Hence, we aim to first i) provide a concise and comprehensive review of the research efforts aimed at SOAP performance enhancement, and consequently ii) develop an improved method toward differential. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Joe Tekli - Coordenador / Richard CHBEIR - Integrante / Ernesto DAMIANI - Integrante., Financiador(es): Contributo Istituzionale Fondazione Cariplo - Auxílio financeiro / University of Milan - Remuneração., Número de produções C, T & A: 2
