Rafael Lopez Rangel
Rafael Rangel is a researcher in computational mechanics with a general interest in multiphysics and multiscale numerical modeling applied across various engineering fields, primarily geotechnical, structural, mechanical, and chemical. Dr. Rangel earned his PhD degree (2024) in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (BarcelonaTech-UPC), Spain, while working as a research engineer in the Structural and Particle Mechanics group of the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) and also completing academic secondments at the University of Surrey and Imperial College London, UK. He obtained his BSc (2016) and MSc (2019) degrees in Civil Engineering from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil, while working as a research fellow in the Modeling and Visualization in Engineering and Geology (MVGEO) group of the Tecgraf Institute of Technical-Scientific Software Development of PUC-Rio (Tecgraf/PUC-Rio). Rafael is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Soil Micro Mechanics (SMM) group of the University of Twente, Netherlands. His ongoing research projects focus on computational modeling and simulation of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of granular materials, employing discrete numerical methods and continuum-discrete multiscale approaches, often enhanced by machine learning-based coupling. Occasionally, he also investigates the geometrically nonlinear behavior of frame structures and develops graphical-interactive software for structural analysis.

As a member of the Structural and Particle Mechanics group, Rafael worked as a research engineer in a national Spanish project ("Proyecto de Generación de Conocimiento"), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MCIN), the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI), and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). During this period, he undertook an academic stay at Monash University, as part of a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Staff Exchanges (MSCA-SE) project funded by the European Commission.
