David Reggio

Graduate in Aesthetic Theory (1999), Masters in Philosophy - Goldsmiths College - University of London (2001) and Doctorate (DPHIL) in PHENOMENOLOGY, PSYCHOANALYSIS AND PSYCHIATRY (Thesis entitled: The Ethic, Diagnostic and Phenomenology of post-war French Psychiatry: psychopathological and institutional perspectives)- Goldsmiths College - University of London (2005). For my doctoral research I was awarded "Arts and Humanities Research Council" funding. I have also recieved funding from the Wellcome Trust International Scientific Foundation, and the University of London. I am Co-chair of the Institue of Historical Research seminar series in the History of the Psyche, and Honorary Research Fellow (pesquisador sênior) - Goldsmiths College - University of London where I have collaborated on extensive research activities with the philosopher and medical historian Professor Howard Caygil. I have worked with Dr. Jean Oury (La Borde Clinic), and especially, Emeritus Professor Jacques Schotte (Louvain) and the pioneer of mental pathology and phenomenology, Professor Henri Maldiney (Lyon). My work with Dr. Oury, represents the pedagogical and institutional concerns of my research, with Professor Schotte, the anthropological and clinical areas, and with Professor Maldiney, the aesthetic and phenomenological. My aim is to synthesise these concerns, with the cultural contexts composing the history of Brazil, and, most importantly, its psychosocial and therapeutic community projects. I remain the only British scholar to have interviewed, dialogued, published and worked with Dr. Jean Oury, Jacques Schotte and Henri Maldiney. I also provided the first English translation of Gilles Deleuze´s early work entitled "mathesis" which, until my translation and introduction of 2007, remained unknown to the English speaking world. My dialogue with Jean Oury was published in 2006, and remains a widely referenced publication, especially because it was the first dialogue to appear with Dr. Oury in English. I am currently in the stages of preparing a publication project with Professor Sylvere Lotringer for 2012 (MIT Press / Semiotext(e)) and Professor Paulo Amarante entitled, "mental health: history, philosophy, legislation". Also, through the work I had undertaken with Professor Schotte, I have gathered much important material to disseminate and, most importantly, to enrich the research culture in the history of psychiatry, psychoanalysis, psychopathology and philosophical anthropology. I am also greatly interested in the tradition inspired by the medico-philosophical studies of F.J.J Buytendijk, Von Gebsattel, Erwin Straus, Viktor von Weizsacker and Leopold Szondi; how these can synthesise with other man-world paradigms specific to our era of paradigm shifts in medecine and healthcare; and how these epistemologies can be specifically integrated into public and community health strategies, enriching notions of human relations. My research has, furthermore, evolved into this analysis of paradigm shifts in healthcare, focusing on questions of training, government and ministerial strategisation and the development of clinical and non-clinical epistemologies. I am also preparing 3 publications to disseminate in the English language wtih Professor Paulo Amarante, director of LAPS, Fiocruz: I have held research awards from The Arts and Humanities Research Council; CNPQ/FIOCRUZ (PV nivel 1); and The Wellcome Trust International Scientific Foundation. I am the founder and senior editor of the Journal, "Health, Culture and Society" published through Pittsburgh University. Presently, I am visiting researcher (pesquisador Visitante) at the Community University of Chapeco, where I am helping and advising on strategies of research culture development, and internationalization.
