  The Political Economy of Agro-food Markets in China. A social construction of the markets in an era of globalization, Descrição: After thirty years of reforms and continuous economic growth, China s agricultural production and food consumption have increased tremendously, leading to a complete evolution of agro-food markets. As China is getting integrated into the global economy, these changes not only affect its 1.3 billion people, but also the whole world, as well documented during the recent commodities price increase. Nevertheless, what really matters extends well beyond the supply and demand situation (domestic and international), and includes issues pertaining to market organization and food availability. The subject of this proposal is the analysis of these agro-food markets, whose structures remains relatively unknown. To tackle this subject, the book adopts a path-dependency approach. The legacies from the Maoist era are considered important for understanding the current diversifications of the agro-food system and its transformation. The objective is thus not to acknowledge the progress of an elusive market economy that remains to be defined, but to analyze market structures in their diversity (the market economies being, after all, extremely diverse Hollingsworth and Boyer, 1997). Great attention is thus paid to the distribution channels that are multiplying, the appearance of agro-food complexes for some industries, the existence of power relations within markets, the way agents are cooperating or competing with each other, etc. In other words, the book aims to analyze the architecture of the agro-food markets (Fligstein, 2001), which influences their performances and evolution. It is hypothesized that this architecture is the process of political, sociological and economic dynamics.   Chinese Development Assistance in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, Descrição: Since the late 1950s, China engaged in a policy of South/South relations, emphasized by the speech of Zhou Enlai at the Bandung conference. The result of this policy was the implementation of large numbers of ODA (Offocial Development Assistance) projects, which can be symbolized, in the 1970s by the construction of the famous Tanzam railway. In recent years, China used this policy, together with its new economic influence, to boost its political and economic interests in various parts of the world. If the media have largely linked this phenomenon to the need for China to access energy and raw materials (cf. the Sudan crisis), Chinese ODA have been implemented in many economic sectors, manufacturing, infrastructure and agriculture being the most important. The project aims at understanding the dynamics of Chinese ODA in this broader framework. Projects in the fields of manufacturing, infrastructure and agriculture are selected in countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia.   Markets and Institutional Changes in China: The sugar industry in the context of globalizatio, Descrição: In the context of her WTO admission in 2001, China has altered the structure of her economy and implemented market reforms. This process has not been as smooth as it seems. Reforms have modified the institutional setting of China s economy at the national and local levels. It has produced winners and losers who compete with each other generating other unpredicted institutional changes. In other words, the performance of China s economy depends on how the interaction between different (kinds of) agents affects institutional changes: as history matters, market organization does, too. Thus, focusing on a single industry, the book provides a detailed description of the industrial organization of China and its integration into the world economy.
