Michiel Adriaan Daam
Michiel Daam é professor visitante no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Ambientais (PPGCA) da Universidade Federal de Alfenas (campus Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, Brasil) desde março de 2024. Antes de sua nomeação atual, Michiel trabalhou em vários institutos renomados em todo o mundo (Holanda, Reino Unido, Portugal, Brasil e Tailândia) como pesquisador e especialista em regulamentação em ecotoxicologia de pesticidas. Ele esteve envolvido em vários projetos nacionais e internacionais na avaliação de risco ecológico de contaminantes como pesticidas, metais e contaminantes emergentes, bem como de o risco de múltiplos químicos. Os tópicos de investigação incluem a base científica e a aplicação de procedimentos de avaliação de riscos ambientais, a ecologia do stress químico, a ecotoxicologia nas águas superficiais e subterrâneas e, mais recentemente, a modelagem dos efeitos ecológicos. A convite, Michiel escreveu vários capítulos sobre a exposição e os efeitos atuais dos pesticidas nas águas superficiais para o relatório Impactos ambientais e na saúde dos pesticidas e fertilizantes e formas de minimizá-los das Nações Unidas (Programa Ambiental). Também atuou como especialista convidado para o desenvolvimento de procedimentos de avaliação de risco de pesticidas para o Ministério do Meio Ambiente do Brasil (IBAMA). Michiel tem um índice h de 23 e publicou mais de 80 artigos revisados por pares, que foram citados mais de 1.500 vezes (Web of Science) até agora. Ele também é Editor Associado da revista Ecotoxicology (Springer) desde 2013 e Editor Revisor da revista Frontiers in Environmental Science (Frontiers) desde 2023.

Efeito na toxicidade de bisfenol A para invertebrados aquáticos tropicais após remoção do composto via adsorvente comercial e de baixo custo, Descrição: O bisfenol A (BPA) é considerado um contaminante emergente de preocupação global devido a sua perturbação dos sistemas endócrinos e onipresença nos ambientes de água doce. A dificuldade de remoção dos contaminantes emergentes, entre eles o BPA, em estações de tratamento de esgoto e estações de tratamento de água, representa uma barreira importante no controle desses compostos nos ambientes aquáticos. Nesse cenário, uma importante questão ainda não investigada é a alteração da toxicidade do BPA para organismos aquáticos decorrente da remoção do composto por um adsorvente alternativo de baixo custo em comparação a um adsorvente comercial. A casca da semente da planta Moringa oleifera é considerada um adsorvente de baixo custo, sendo anteriormente provado efetiva para a remoção de substâncias como anti-inflamatórios e pesticidas. O presente estudo terá como objetivo avaliar e comparar a toxicidade de BPA, em solução e em amostra ambiental, para dois organismos de água doce tropicais (larva do inseto Chironomus sancticaroli e o cladócero Ceriodaphnia silvestrii), antes e após processo de adsorção do composto utilizando carvão ativado em pó comercial e casca da semente de M. oleifera. Os organismos-testes serão expostos a concentrações e amostra ambiental contendo BPA e os efeitos em parâmetros do ciclo de vida dos invertebrados serão avaliados. Destino e impactos de microplásticos e pesticidas em matrizes aquáticas e terrestres em contextos agrícolas, Descrição: A contaminação do meio ambiente por partículas de plástico [por exemplo, partículas < 5 mm de tamanho conhecidas como microplásticos (MPs)] emergiu como uma das questões mais proeminentes atualmente enfrentadas pelas agências ambientais governamentais em todo o mundo. Embora essas partículas geralmente tenham baixa toxicidade, elas são altamente persistentes e sua capacidade de adsorver substâncias tóxicas e lixiviar seus aditivos tem potencial para alterar o destino ambiental e a ecotoxicidade dessas substâncias. Os materiais plásticos utilizados no setor agrícola são uma das principais fontes de MPs em águas doces, e substâncias como pesticidas podem estar associadas a essas partículas gerando consequências ainda desconhecidas no meio ambiente. Os pesticidas estão entre os maiores desafios à sustentabilidade no modelo do agronegócio. Desafios contínuos para entender o destino ambiental dos pesticidas incluem processos que influenciam sua sorção em partículas na fase aquosa, e essas partículas agora incluem a presença de MPs. Neste projeto, propomos uma abordagem multidisciplinar para investigar como pesticidas e microplásticos influenciam mútua e individualmente seu destino, transporte e toxicidade no solo e nos ecossistemas de água doce. Tanto os pesticidas quanto os MPs são contaminantes ambientais de alta relevância em águas doces de países como o Brasil, que combinam elevado grau de urbanização e grandes regiões de produção agrícola intensiva que têm fortes impactos na prestação de serviços ecológicos desses ambientes. Um planejamento experimental inovador integrará (1) experimentos de laboratório e mesocosmos para entender melhor os aspectos químicos de degradação e sorção/dessorção de pesticidas a MPs e seu transporte sob diferentes condições ambientais, presença de biofilmes, aditivos plásticos, etc. e, (2) principais testes toxicológicos (agudos e crônicos) para avaliar a biodisponibilidade, os efeitos comportamentais e fisiológicos, a concentração letal causada pela associação desses contaminantes aos organismos, além dos efeitos nas funções e serviços ecossistêmicos.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Michiel Adriaan Daam - Coordenador / Cassiana Carolina Montagner - Integrante / Evaldo Luiz Gaeta Espindola - Integrante.

Análise do tiametoxam em tecido de abelha e de pólen por LCMSMS e avaliação do risco ambiental do inseticida tiametoxam aplicado ao cultivo do morango sobre as abelhas Apis mellifera L. e Tetragonisca angustula Latreille (1811), Descrição: The aim of this project is to conduct an environmental risk assessment of the neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam. This includes the exposure assessment in bee tissue and pollen, which will also be used to evaluate existing fate models. In addition, the toxicity will be evaluated to the standard bee test species Apis mellifera and the stingless bee Tetragonisca angustula, which is native to South and Central America. This will include toxicity testing of both adults and larvae of these species and the evaluation of effects on selected biomarkers. Environmental effects of the pasture-sugarcane conversion and pasture intensification, Descrição: Sugarcane ethanol is an alcohol-based renewable biofuel produced by the fermentation of sugarcane extract and molasses, and Brazil is the world's largest producer of it. Brazil is also the largest producer of sugar; hence, sugarcane agriculture in the country is quite extensive, covering an area of about 10 million ha of arable land and ranking as the third largest crop after corn and soybean. Looking back, there is no doubt that Brazil's successful use of sugarcane significantly reduced the country's oil dependency, increased energy security, contributed to a thriving economy, and positioned Brazil as a world leader in the biofuel sector. In recent years, the increases in bioethanol consumption in the country and the production of bioelectricity from sugarcane solid waste have also reduced GHG emissions considerably. However, growing concerns about the social and environmental costs associated with ethanol production at a large scale have led to the development of indicators of environmental sustainability that allow quantifying both costs and benefits of biofuels benefits to society. The criteria adopted to assess biofuel sustainability are quite comprehensive and should help society to realize the benefits of biofuels. Nevertheless, our knowledge about the impacts of sugarcane ethanol produced in Brazil is still limited, especially for water and soils, and presents a serious obstacle in assessing sugarcane biofuel sustainability. One of the premises is that land requirements for biofuel should not exert extra pressure on native ecosystems or compete with food production by using the best agricultural lands. This premise implies that the expansion of biofuel crops like sugarcane should proceed without future clearings or without advancing over food crops. One alternative that has been considered to avoid clearing of native vegetation of Brazilian biomes is to expand energy crops in degraded or underutilized pasturelands. In order to free pastureland for other uses, the same number of animal heads, including future expansions, should be accommodated in an area smaller area by stocking rates (number of animals per hectare). We called this process "pasture intensification". Land use intensification to produce increase animal production per unit of pastureland or to convert pastureland to sugarcane has to be implemented in a way that preserves basic ecosystem integrity and maximizes the provision of ecosystem services. In order to do that, a set of environmental management practices conducive to that goal are needed. Based on this previous discussion, the goal of this project is to assess the environmental consequences of two major land intensifications that are critical for Brazil and the development of the bioenergy industry in other subtropical and tropical areas: the conversion of pasturelands to sugarcane fields, and the intensification in pastureland management that, potentially, enables such conversion. Our ultimate goal is to provide a series of management practices that would preserve the environmental integrity, and maximize ecosystem services. More specifically we will address how land intensification affects the water, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics, and how pollution (pesticides) and fragmentation from agriculture affect ecosystems functioning. In order to achieve such goal we propose the follow components of the project: (i) a set of paired field experiments where pasturelands plots will be intensified to increase the animal product output per unit area or converted to sugarcane fields with the purpose of investigating changes in nutrients and contaminants dynamics; (ii) at watershed level (100 to 1,000 ha), a series of studies to assess the effect of agricultural intensification on the landscape ecology and water cycle. Knowledge, Assessment, and Management for AQUAtic Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services aCROSS EU policies (AQUACROSS), Descrição: AQUACROSS aims to support EU efforts to enhance the resilience and stop the loss of biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems as well as to ensure the ongoing and future provision of aquatic ecosystem services. It focuses on advancing the knowledge base and application of the ecosystem-based management concept for aquatic ecosystems by developing cost effective measures and integrated management practices. AQUACROSS considers the EU policy framework (i.e. goals, concepts, time frames) for aquatic ecosystems and builds on knowledge stemming from different sources (i.e. WISE, BISE, Member State reporting, modelling) to develop innovative management tools, concepts, and business models (i.e. indicators, maps, ecosystem assessments, participatory approaches, mechanisms for promoting the delivery of ecosystem services) for aquatic ecosystems at various scales. Linking exposure of Brazilian freshwater ecosystems to pesticide mixtures with their environmental side-effects, Descrição: A presente proposta de pesquisa, entitulada Linking exposure of Brazilian freshwater ecosystems to pesticide mixtures with their environmental side-effects, tem por objetivo contribuir para o conhecimento do potencial de risco de pesticida utilizado em agroecossistemas do Brasil, utilizando-se de condições experimentais mais realísticas. Para tanto, pretende-se avaliar os efeitos da exposição isolada e/ou de misturas de pesticidas sobre a estrutura e funcionamento de ecossistemas naturais; calibrar e validar os modelos de uso de pesticidas desenvolvidos nos EUA e Europa, para predizer as concentrações de pesticidas que atingem os ecossistemas aquáticos estabelecidos em regiões tropicais; avaliar os efeitos dos pesticidas em cadeia trófica, também contribuindo para a compreensão dos efeitos nas características limnológicas e, por último, avaliar se e como as condições de análise de risco podem ser extrapoladas das regiões temperadas para regiões tropicais (Brasil). A área de estudo selecionada é o município de Bom Repouso, localizado em Minas Gerais, que se caracteriza como um dos maiores produtores de morango e batata do Brasil, o qual vem sendo estudado desde 2005 pela equipe do NEEA/EESC/USP. Os resultados obtidos vêm servindo de base para a realização de diversas pesquisas envolvendo pesticidas e seus efeitos em sistemas terrestres, aquáticos e na saúde humana, originando um arcabouço de informações relevantes para a aplicação da ARE e para a realização de novos arranjos experimentais. Para tanto, prevê-se que a participação do Dr. Michiel Daam, na categoria de PVE, será de suma importância para que um maior alcance social/econômico e ambiental das pesquisas na região seja alcançado. Extrapolação espacial dos resultados de estudos de modelos de ecossistemas na União Europeia, Descrição: O projecto pretendeu colmatar a falta de estudos de fase avançada que simulem as condições mediterrânicas e avaliem misturas de pesticidas ambientalmente realísticas.
