Alan Prout

My empirical research is concerned with the use of electronic toys and playthings in the home setting by young children - to what extent are these replacing traditional play objects and do they change the learning patterns and potentials of young children. This work is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. I also have a developing project on the role of trust relations in schools. This is currently being considered for funding by the ESRC. In addition I am assisting Prof. Pia Christensen with her project on children growing up in new urban communities. In general terms my continuing interest is in how social theory can better incorporate children and childhood, and their role, perspectives and interests.
