Stuart Campbell Aitken

Possui bacharelado em Geografia pela University of Glasgow (1980), mestrado em Geografia pela Miami University - Ohio (1981) e doutorado em Geografia pela The University of Western Ontario (1985). Atualmente é professor titular da San Diego State University (SDSU), Presidente da Association of Pacific Coast Geographers e Professor Honorário da University of Wales Aberystwyth. Também é co-fundador e atualmente dirige o Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Youth and Space, ligado ao Departamento de Geografia da SDSU.

Young People as Agents of Change: The Experiences of New Immigrant Families in a Border Community, Descrição: This project examines how children and young people act as agents of change with regard to the community involvement and civic participation of new immigrant families in a suburb of San Diego, California. The goals of the project are to uncover different pathways and strategies that immigrant adults develop and follow as a result of their interaction with children and young people in their communities. By analyzing how young people exert a continual and subtle influence on the knowledge and perspectives of immigrant adult family members, this project will advance knowledge of the way immigrant families overcome barriers to assimilation and become involved in their communities. Recovering Fatherhood: A Study of the Social and Spatial Politics of Exclusion, Descrição: This part of the study explores normative views of being a father amongst a sample of fathers whose place in a family is contested by past behaviors and practices. The specific focus of change for this project is exclusion from, or tension within, families due to a father s past substance abuse and other dependencies. The Emotional Work of Fathering: A Study of the Spatial Construction of Fathering, Descrição: An ongoing ten-year longitudinal study using ethnographic interviews and participant observation explores how much of the institution of fatherhood hinges on an idea that does not embrace the fact of fathering as a daily emotional practice that is negotiated, contested and resisted differently in different spaces.
