Artur Manuel Cavaco Paulo
Possui graduação em Química pela Universidade de Lisboa(1986), mestrado em Tecnologia Têxtil pela Universidade do Minho(1992) e doutorado em Engenharia Têxtil pela Universidade do Minho(1995). Atualmente é professor titular da Universidade do Minho. Tem experiência na área de Engenharia Química, com ênfase em Tecnologia Química. Atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas:celulases, algodão, agitação mecânica, composição enzimática, celulose.

NOVO - Novel approaches for prevention and degeneration of pathogenic bacteria biofilms formed on medical devices e.g. catheters - FP7- 278402, Descrição: Biofilms are bacterial communities encased in a self-produced hydrated polymeric matrix. An important characteristic of microbial biofilms is their innate resistance to the immune system and susceptibility to antibiotics. This resistance has made microbial biofilms a common cause of medical infections, and difficult-to-treat infections caused by colonized foreign bodies. The NOVO project aims at developing novel approaches to prevent and/or degrade biofilms on catheters elongating their usage in humans up to 10 days. Two complementary approaches for biofilm prophylaxis will be developed: A. Ultrasonic coating of Inorganic antibiofouling agents (process developed by partner BIU) based on a single step sonochemical process to: a) Produce metal fluorides or metal oxides (e.g. MgF2, ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) and simultaneously b) Impregnate them as antibacterial factors on the catheters. c) Co-coating with bio-inert polymer layers (containing highly hydrophilic antifouling polyethylene glycol, zwitterionic moieties or sugar-groups) grafted onto NPs of adjusted size to the size of MgF2/ZnO NPs or directly onto MgF2/ZnO NPs; to form a hydrogel layer for the protection of the MgF2/ZnO antibiofouling activity. B. Bio/organic antibiofouling activation: 1) Novel coating for catheters based on radical catalyzed polymers to yield anti-bacterial activity. An enzymatic reaction will be applied on the phenolic compounds to generate phenolic radicals to be further polymerized on the catheter surface as an antibiofilm agent. 2) Develop and engineer Cellobiose Dehydrogenases (CDH) that actively oxidizes and degrades biofilms polysaccharides concomitantly producing stoichiometrically H2O2 as antibacterial agent. The enzymes will be coated on the catheters via a lubricant or by the Ultrasonic (US) process after their immobilization. COTTONBLEACH - Improved Novel Eco-Friendly Bleaching System for Cotton Using Enzyme and Ultrasound Processes - FP7 243529, Descrição: Cotton textiles --the main natural-fiber textile used worldwide-- undergo a toxic and costly bleaching process that weighs heavily on the quality, cost and environmental impact of textile manufacture. CottonBleach proposes the development of an improved cotton bleaching technology, more respectful with the textiles and the environment, to improve the competitive edge of European textile SMEs. Current bleaching methods use hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO, aka bleach), resulting in fabric damage, formation of toxic by-products and large amounts of water and energy to remove these chemicals. The proposed CottonBleach technology offers a non-toxic Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) bleaching technology using a combination of sequential enzymatic techniques enhanced through the use of ultrasound technology. This innovative technology will maintain the natural strength of the cotton fiber, providing significantly improved bleaching effectiveness with minimal fiber damage. The scientific objective of CottonBleach is to further investigate the use of ultrasound-enhanced enzymatic bleaching on an industrial scale of development, as manifested by recently published economic analysis which consider the use of enzymes as cost effective for textile mills to adopt. NANOFOL Folate-based nanobiodevices for integrated diagnosis/therapy targeting chronic inflammatory diseases. SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME THEME [NMP] [FP7-NMP-2008-LARGE-2 (FP7 NMP-2008-4.0-1)], Descrição: NANOFOL proposes to develop a new diagnostic/therapy approach using folate based nanobiodevices (FBN) able to provide a new type of cost efficient treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases such as Atherosclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis with low side effects that will constitute a more advantageous solution than current therapies. NANOFOL will achieve all that by fulfilling the following objectives: Design , development and production of nanobiodevices (FBN) targeting directly effector cells Proof of concept in vitro and in vivo of a folate based nanodevice targeting activated macrophages in chronic inflammation not affecting bystander cells Proof of concept in vitro and in vivo of a nanodevice containing a bispecific antibody (against folate receptor and another macrophage marker) targeting activated macrophages in chronic inflammation not affecting bystander cells Proof of concept of FBN delivery therapeutic agents (by small interfering ribonucleic acid molecules (siRNA) or lipophylic molecules) targeting inflammatory signaling pathways In vitro and in vivo testing of cellular toxicity caused by the novel nanobiodevices in cells other than activated macrophages Design of models that will enable to minimize animal experimentation. Development of a strategy to assess potential risks in order to ensure nanobiodevice safe delivery. NANOFOL has adopted a specific risk strategy to attain objectives in a step by step approach allowing improving gradually the concept (specificity, stability, side effects efficacy) from the lower to the higher risky solutions ensuring reduced experimental animal testing and high human safety. Biorenew White Biotechnology for added value products from renewable plant polymers: Design of tailor-made biocatalysts and new Industrial bioprocesses. SIXTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME NMP2-CT-2006-026456, Descrição: Plant polymers are the main source of renewable materials in Earth. The use of biotechnology will permit to develop new routes for cellulose and lignin-based added value products, including speciality paper products and surfactants. The industrial utilization of cellulose includes pulps for the paper industry. However, its characteristics permits to use cellulose for speciality products whose potential is still to be fully investigated. Lignin is a heterogeneous aromatic polymer, highly recalcitrant towards degradation. Most industrial uses of cellulose require the previous removal of lignin, which is generally burnt at the mill. However, the chemical nature of lignin makes this polymer an interesting source of aromatic chemicals. Oxidoreductases are involved in both lignin biosynthesis and biodegradation. Therefore, they have the highest potential for modification of lignocellulosic materials and isolated lignins. However, the natural enzymes are far to optimally operate under industrial conditions. Some oxidoreductases have been extensively investigated in terms of structure-function relationships. This will allow a new approach based on tuning their catalytic and operational properties using protein-engineering tools, such as forced evolution, and site-directed mutagenesis. The applications of tailor-made enzymes will include among others: i) increase of strength and other properties of cellulose fibres, and improve refining; ii) production of lignin-free cellulose for high-quality products; iii) production of lignin-based surfactants (as dispersants and nano-emulsifiers) and adhesives. In this way, the IP will contribute to maintain the EU leading position in the market of industrial biotechnology. The potential impact is illustrated by the turnover of the EU Paper-Forest cluster that attains 400 000 million/year. Lidwine Multifunctional Medical Textiles for wound (e.g. Decubitus) prevention and improved wound healing. SIXTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME NMP2-CT-2006-026741, Descrição: The project focuses on the development of multifunctional medical textiles to prevent wounds (such as Decubitus) on one hand and stimulate wound healing on the other hand. Three different approaches will be followed: 1. blood circulation stimulation: a textile-based massage cuff will be realized in which electric field sensitive contractive polymers are integrated. Alternatively electro-pulsed muscle stimulation will be realized by a textile integrated electrodes-circuits. 2. reduction of skin-textile friction: nano-coatings will be developed with this property based on brush-nanocoatings. 3. development of anti-bacterial textiles with controlled moisture management. Basic anti-bacterial properties will be realized by application of specific biopolymers and functionalized nanoparticles produced and applied by ultrasound. Additionally controlled (both initiation and rate of release) drug release will be developed in which the release will be controlled by an enzymatic switch. In this approach integration of the different systems developed will be an important issue for optimal performance. All products from the 3 approaches will be technically validated and evaluated in practise (hospitals). SIXTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME - Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher, Descrição: The Protect and Gamble European Technical Centre (B) and its partners offer the opportunity to 7 fellows to build up scientific-technological knowledge in the field of enzyme technology and encapsulation/surfactant structuring technology in order to develop sustainable detergents that will lead to significant reductions of detergent weight, energy, CO2 and solid waste. Protex Modified proteases for the reduction of felting and shrinkage of wool textiles. EC Fifth Framework Programme, Descrição: The market value of wool is limited by the fact that consumers place increasingly high demands on machine wash ability and soft handle. Felting, which is a typical property of wool due to the configuration of the scales of the wool fibre, is a serious problem, especially during washing. Chlorination, followed by polymer deposition, is commonly used to confer shrink-resistance, but this involves major drawbacks with respect to chlorine and the environment. The main aspect of this proposal is to develop a novel enzymatic process for producing machine washable wool by limiting the enzymatic degradation of wool fibres to their cuticle scales. The novel engineered enzymes will be developed to achieve this goal. The radically new bioprocessing regimes for wool scouring and finishing processes, and commercial products will be developed. Biosyntex Biotechnical quality improvement of synthetic textile fibres, Descrição: The modification of synthetic fibres in order to obtain the desired end-product properties requires high amounts of energy and chemicals, which are partially discharged to the environment and are released from the end-products causing serious health risks. BioSynTex will develop new enzyme systems for the targeted modification of polyester (PET), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyamide (PA/Ar) fibres. The obtained quality improving functionalities on the fibre surface will be characterised in detail. Eco-efficient finishing processes using the enzymatically modified fibres will be investigated in laboratory sale and larger scale using typical machinery. Savings of up to 30 % dye, 55 % energy and 20 % water during dyeing of textiles (clothing) and 45 % coupling agents during coating of PET (for tarpaulins) and 30 % of binders during the production of awning fabrics (from PAN) can be expected based on the new fibre functionalities.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Artur Manuel Cavaco Paulo - Coordenador.
