Carbon sequestration, biodiversity and social structures in Southern Amazonia: models and implementation of carbon-optimized land management strategies, Descrição: Climate change (increased unpredictability of rainfall, rising temperatures and extended drought periods) and intensification of land use (recession of natural vegetation) both increase release of greenhouse gases (GHG), and reduce ecosystem services, biodiversity, and livelihoods. This project aims at providing multidisciplinary solutions for these problems. Three regions along the land use frontier of Southern Amazonia were selected: Southern Pará: most active deforestation; Northern Mato Grosso: young soy bean production; Central Mato Grosso: old cultivation (>20a), and adapted mechanised cropping (e.g. no tillage). Analyses focus on soil carbon turnover, climate, ecosystem functions and socio-economic processes. Model-Software will be combined to inform the decision-taking process based on field and acquired data, including a step-by-step upscaling from local to landscape and regional scale. All research and implementation activities include direct involvement of the stakeholders. Furthermore, joint field experiments for improving carbon storage, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions will be performed in tight cooperation with an NGO founded by the farmers' organisation of Mato Grosso. Results will be carried on by direct implementation of stakeholders, through human capacity building, and by promoting financially feasible, carbon-sequestering land use techniques throughout tropical areas. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (3) / Especialização: (2) / Mestrado acadêmico: (1) . , Integrantes: Gerhard Gerold - Coordenador / Stefan Hohnwald - Integrante / Karl Matthias Wantzen - Integrante / Eduardo guimaães couto - Integrante / Ricardo Santos Silva Amorim - Integrante / Emilio Carlos Azevedo - Integrante / Oscarlina L. The influence of pedo-hydrological changes on the water and nutrient cycle in catchment areas, Descrição: Rainforest conversion alters hydraulic soil conductivity. Field analysis and hydrochemical laboratory analyses of water samples from rainfall, throughfall, soil water, river discharge showed significant changes in water balance and nutrient cycling between natural rainforest and slash&burn and cacao catchment. Long data record of water fluxes showed significant increase in water discharge and flooding risk after deforestation of 40-60% catchment area. With WASIM-ETH water balance was modelled for land use change and climate change in the future.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Mestrado acadêmico: (4) . , Integrantes: Gerhard Gerold - Coordenador.
