  Plant diversity, pollination- and seed-dispersal syndroms in backyards and gardens of Chiriquí, Western Panama., Descrição: Urban growth has eroded wild plant diversity in Western Panama as well as in many other areas of the world making necessary to determine to what extent plants in gardens and backyards are reservoirs of biodiversity. Native plants in gardens and backyards potentially supply resources to wild birds, insects and other animals feeding on them but it depends of the relative abundace of such plants and their syndroms of pollination and seed dispersal. Surveys will be made in the homes of students of the University of Chiriquí and their relatives in order to assess the just mentioned aspects and asking what criteria each family considered for deciding what plants to cultivate.   Depths, shapes and locations of liana-roots in contrasting soils., Descrição: A number of studies suggest that one key characteristic of the climbing habit of woody plants is having deep roots and it has been suggested that this was a key adaptation during the evolution of lianas. Still there is few evidence showing whether deep roots of lianas are a characteristic strongly encoded by the genotype or simply a result of phenotipic plasticity. In order to test these two alternative hypotheses, the roots of 200 liana-individuals of different species will be excavated in Chiriquí, Western Panama, in very rich, fertile volcanic soil -on the one hand, and poor, red clay on the other.   Two Stories About Lianas: Historical Ecology and Evolution., Descrição: The origins of current distribution of plant species and the diversity and species composition of plant communities is a result of both a short term and a long-term histories. Forests of today are a legacy of previous human land-use; species there -however are a legacy of evolutionary processes. This project explains how liana-species composition in the Mayan region of Mexico resulted from previous land-use by humans by means of re-constructing the land-use history and look for the most parsimonious explanation on how such land-use differentially affected lianas. The origins, evolution and conquest of the Tropics by climbing woody vines is being reconstructed in a similar way: achieving evidence from Plant Anatomy and Morphology, Biogeography, Ecology and the Fossil Record to formulate a mechanistic explanation of how did lianas evolve.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Edgardo Israel Garrido Perez - Coordenador.
