Daniel den Engelsen

Daniel den Engelsen got his Ph. D (Chemistry) in 1968 at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands). He worked in Philips Research Laboratories Eindhoven and Philips Display Components in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) from 1968-2004. In Philips Research Laboratories he worked on molecular memory devices and ionic conductors for batteries. At Philips Display Components he developed new technologies for cathode ray tubes. From 1985-2000 he was manager of the advanced development of cathode ray tubes and flat panel displays. He retired from Philips in 2004. Experience: Surface science, ellipsometry, solid state chemistry, colloid science, CRT-technologies, thermionic and cold cathodes, light and electron optics, phosphor technology, spectroscopy, color theory and managing large groups of R&D professionals. In 2002 he was awarded as Fellow of the Society of Information Displays (SID). Since 2003 he is Associated (and guest) Editor of the Journal of the SID. Now he is Associate Professor at Brunel University in London (UK), Visiting Professor at Southeast University in Nanjing (China), Visiting Scientist at Centro de Tecnologia da Informação Renato Archer in Campinas (Brazil) and Visiting Scientist at Associação Brasileira de Informática in Campinas (Brazil). His most important activities are now giving lectures on display technology, helping young scientists in doing research, helping scientists writing publications, organizing conferences, doing scientific research. Present areas of research and interest: LEDs, cold and hot cathodes, thin film technologies, luminescence, OLEDs, photonic materials, phosphor materials, solid state chemistry, backlights for LCDs, solar cells and gas discharge phenomena.
