Cíntia Akemi Oi

Possui Licenciatura e Bacharelado em Ciências Biológicas pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (2008) e Mestrado em Genética e Evolução pela mesma instituição (2010). Atuou como Tutora Presencial no curso de Bacharelado em Engenharia Ambiental (UFSCAR 2011-2012). Em 2016, concluiu o Doutorado em Biologia na KU Leuven (Laboratory of Socioecology and Social Evolution - Bélgica), com pesquisa relacionada com a identificação de ferormônios relacionados a comunicação em insetos sociais. Após dua defesa, atuou como pós-doutoranda na KU Leuven (2016-2022). Atualmente está realizando sua pequisa com vespas solitárias na UCL (UK). Foi financiada pela Marie Curie fellowship (MSCA-IF) e agora pela NERC. Seu interesse está relacionado a genômica de insetos sociais, ecologia química, conservação de abelhas e evolução do comportamento social. E-mail:c.oi@ucl.ac.uk

The chemical crown of royalty: the origin and evolution of queen pheromones in insect societies, Descrição: Social insects display a remarkable reproductive division of labour between fertile queens and largely sterile workers. Queen pheromones, which signal the presence of a fertile queen and suppress reproduction in the daughter workers, are thought to play a key role in regulating this unique social system. Nevertheless, progress in the study of social insect queen pheromones has been slow due to the fact that up until a few years ago, only the honeybee queen pheromone had been successfully identified. Recently, however, Prof. Wenseleers and co-workers discovered that various structurally related cuticular hydrocarbons act as sterility enforcing queen pheromones in an ant, a wasp and the bumblebee. The present project follows up from these findings, and will investigate how queen or fertility-linked pheromones evolved across different key groups of social insects characterized by various degrees of sociality, and how these signals originated in solitary ancestors. Conflict and cooperation in insect societies, Descrição: Cooperation is ubiquitous in the natural world: different genes and cells work together within multicellular organisms, many animals cooperate in societies, different species can engage in interspecific mutualisms and humans cooperate with each other in a myriad number of ways. Yet, cooperation represents a major evolutionary challenge, since uncooperative, selfish individuals would frequently be expected to be at an advantage relative to more cooperative group members. Solving the puzzle of cooperation is considered by some as among the most important outstanding questions in biology and the social sciences at this moment. In recent years, insect societies such as bees and wasps have emerged as a major model system to study the question of what sets the balance between cooperation and conflict in biological systems. In my own research, for example, we have found that cooperation in insect societies is to a large extent socially enforced and that some conflicts in insect societies resemble ?tragedies of the commons?, which previously were known mainly from human systems. The primary aim of this part of the project will be to test how queen pheromones in social insects evolved across different lineages of social insects with widely divergent phylogenetic placement (e.g. stingless bees and primitively eusocial wasps).
