  Tailor Made Biotechnology for Endogenous Development Programme, Descrição: The Tailor Made Biotechnology for Endogenous Development Programme is an initiative of Wageningen University. It aims to link the advances in biological sciences (referred to as biotechnology) to endogenous development. TMBT is operational in India, Kenya, China, Ghana, Cuba and Brazil. It address issues as participatory plant breeding, biofertilisers, biopesticides, etc. Most important is that tailor made biotechnology supports the development at local level, which in the context of brazil would be agricultura familiar within a context of agro-ecology and agrobiodiversity. The preparatory phase uses cases as illustrations that biotechnology does not only support commercial and industrial agriculture but also can target local development. The cases are instrumental for designing a large programme to be submitted to a range of donors.   Client Oriented Research Project, Agrobiodiversity Component, Lake Zone, Tanzania., Descrição: The assignment addressed specific aspects related to agrobiodiversity within the Client Oriented Research Project of a regional agricultural research centre within Lake Zone, Tanzania. Crop breeding and conservation programme were reviewed and new activities were identified and planned using a participatory and integrated approach during a multidisciplinary workshop facilitated by the consultant.   Community Biodiversity Conservation and Development (CBDC) Programme, Descrição: The Community Biodiversity Conservation and Development (CBDC) is an international programme that aims to study local innovation by rural communities in the field of biodiversity management and use, to identify ways to support these communties and elaborate linkages between formal and informal players in this field. It is an initiative of a group of NGOs (including AS-PTA, Brazil) complemented by governmental genebanks (Centre for Genetic Resources The Netherlands), research organisations and university groups. In the period 1993-1998, CBDC was operational in the following countries (Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Canada, Netherlands and Norway). The CBDC was unique at the global level of addressing the development of local conservation strategies, addressing the link between in situ conservation, participatory plant breeding and local seed supply, however emphasising the role of rural communities.   Genetic Resource Policy Initiative (GRPI), Descrição: The Genetic Resources Policy Initiatives aims to strengthen the capacity for genetic resource policy development within a range of least developed countries. It is operational within Peru, Nepal, Ethiopia, Egypt, Zambia and Vietnam and works through three regional organisations being Andean Community, East Africa, and West and Central Africa. It addresses issues related to biodiversity access and benefit sharing, biosafety, intellectual property rights, farmers' rights, plant variety protection, mechanisms for supporting informal and formal seed supply, etc etc. The approach is to identify within the countries and regions key issues to be addressed and use these as ways to develop capacity strengthening subprojects. The function of ETC is to assist in using a multistakeholder process in the identification of issues and ensuring the participation of relevant stakeholders (academic, conservation and management, policy, civil society, private sector) in the project. Social science research is applied within this approach.   Centre for Biodiversity Utilisation and Development (CBUD), Project, Kumasi, Ghana, West Africa, Descrição: The project covered the review of the implementation and establishment of the Centre for Biodiversity Utilisation and Development within the Kwame Nkruma University of Science and Technology as well as the formulation and planning of the second phase of its programme. The input was commissioned by the Royal Netherlands Embassy. The Centre facilitates the process of product development through the formation of multistakeholder groups and integrated design of a chain from potential biodiversity product identification to marketing the product in local, regional, national or international markets. It thereby operates in a very specific niche essential to initating and facilitating product development between partners that do not have the natural habit to work together (academic, local communities, traders and/or food processors). Various elements with respect to the approach used as relating the multistakeholder process and institutional development were addressed.   Bhutan Integrated Biodiversity Information System (BIBIS), Project, Descrição: The Bhutan Integrated Biodiversity Information Systems (BIBIS) project was developed by the team and subsequently submitted for securing financial support by the Royal Government of Bhutan and WWF-Bhutan Programme. Partners involved in biodiversity conservation management and sustainable use aim to establish and make operational the BIBIS as a well-known and reliable information system for biodiversity stakeholders (partners and clients) in Bhutan and beyond. The National Biodiversity Centre (NBC) with a mandate to coordinate all biodiversity related activities in the country, coordinated the developmental phase of the BIBIS project with financial support from the WWF Bhutan Programme. The development of the BIBIS project proposal involved a multi-stakeholder approach. In order to obtain information required to formulate the project, a demand & capacity survey were undertaken, technical & institutional aspects were also addressed. It is expected that BIBIS will become a well-known and highly accessible source of biodiversity information for use to biodiversity stakeholders in Bhutan and beyond. It should become a natural reference point for dissemination of biodiversity information for use by policy makers and planners for the conservation, management and the sustainable utilization of the biological resources in the nation. The establishment of BIBIS would further contribute to activities such as biodiversity gap analysis, eco-tourism, education and bioprospecting that has the potentials of generating additional revenue for the country.   Centre for African Wetlands, Accra, Ghana, West Africa, Descrição: During the assignment, a mid term review was implemented to study the achievements and orientations for the development of the Centre for African Wetlands. This Regional Research and Networking Centre established within the University of Ghana, Legon, aims to support regional management programmes, research groups and NGOs involved in the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands in West and Central Africa. Various recommendations were made addressing the institutional set-up, partner composition and regional embedding. A central observation was the need to integrate conservation and management, with research and policy planning.   Afadjato-Agumatsa Community Forest Conservation Project, Ghana, West Africa, Descrição: The ETC Team (de Boef, Enyola) was responsible for the evaluation of an integrated community conservation and development project implemented by the Ghana Wildlife Society with the Traditional Communities in the Agumatsa Range. The resource base of the local communities and the biodiversity of the Agumatsa range are under serious threat. The longer ecosystem destruction, biodiversity and forest cover loss continue, the more difficult it will be to rehabilitate the ecosystem and to safeguard it as a water catchment area crucial for sustaining the falls. These aspects are addressed in the Afadjato-Agumatsa Community Forest Conservation Project. A major issue identified was that the project has operated under quite severe constraints. Lack of commitment from three of the four communities in the traditional areas, who have not yet agreed to provide their land for inclusion in the protected area, has greatly slowed down the process. The conclusion was drawn that it is crucial that all communities that have a stake in the management of the ecosystem to be conserved should participate from the start. Major achievements of the first phase of the project are the establishment of the reserve. The institutional framework, office and community framework has been established. A project management committee is in place. The project during its initiation has put a major emphasis on capacity development at the GWS and community level. Major attention has emerged for tourism development.   Amanzuri Integrated Conservation and Development Project, Accra, Ghana, West Africa, Descrição: The ETC Team (de Boef, Lanting) was responsible for the evaluation of the Amanzuri Integrated Conservation and Development Project implemented by the Ghana Wildlife Society with Traditional communities in the Amanzuri Wetland in West Ghana. The project aims to link conservation of the wetland with social organisation of communities, eco-tourism development and small-scale enterprise development. The evaluation team concluded that the conservation activities were well implemented however the social organisation of the 8 communities living within the wetland required additional attention. It became evident that GWS has strong nature conservation capacities while social and marketing aspects require additional attention.
