Luis Marcelo de Mattos Zeri

Graduado em Física pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (1999), mestre em Meteorologia pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (2002) e doutor em Geo-ecologia pela Universidade de Bayreuth, Alemanha (2008), com bolsa do Max-Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC), em Jena, Alemanha. Fez pós-doutorado no MPI-BGC, trabalhando com a caracterização dos fluxos turbulentos medidos durante o experimento de advecção do projeto CARBOEUROPE-IP, realizado em 2006. De 2008 a 2011 fez pós-doutorado no Energy Biosciences Institute, em Urbana, Estados Unidos, na área de impacto ambiental na produção de biocombustíveis, através do monitoramento de fluxos de água e carbono com torres micro-meteorológicas sobre quatro ecossistemas agrícolas. Tem ampla experiência na área de Geociências, com ênfase em Micrometeorologia e Ciência do Sistema Terrestre, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: fluxos turbulentos de carbono, vapor dágua e energia em ecossistemas florestais e agrícolas, análise harmônica e estatística de sinais geofísicos de alta freqüência em estudos da turbulência atmosférica sobre superfícies vegetadas, e monitoramento de secas usando dados observacionais e de sensoriamento remoto de precipitação, umidade do solo e saúde da vegetação. Atualmente é pesquisador da área de agrometeorologia e impactos da seca no Centro Nacional de Monitoramento e Alertas de Desastres Naturais (CEMADEN).

Bridging land-surface fluxes and aerosol concentrations to triggering convective rainfall, Descrição: O projeto proposto objetiva estudar o ciclo de vida de aerossóis secundários em ambientes limpos e poluídos na Camada Limite Atmosferica (CLA) da Amazônia. O estudo abrange condições biológicas e físicas que influenciam emissões e reações dos precursores (compostos organicos voláteis biogenicos e antropogenicos, VOCs), formação, transporte de aerossóis para fora da CLA e seu papel na formação de nuvens e chuvas. Uma combinação de medições dos fluxos turbulentos de energia, gases-traço e aerossóis, perfis da camada limite com balões cativos e simulações de modelos será realizada em duas regiões na Amazônia Central: uma região com ar e uma paisagem de floresta pristina e uma região influenciada pela pluma de poluição próxima a cidade de Manaus. Environmental Impact and Sustainability of Feedstock Production, Descrição: The widespread deployment of biofuel feedstocks may herald a new era for US agriculture; an era in which feedstock production and ecological impacts are balanced leading to a sustainable system. Because of their high rates of biomass accumulation with minimal nutrient inputs, Miscanthus x giganteus, switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), and restored prairie hold great promise as potential feedstock crops in the US Midwest. Before the self-scouring steel plow, this region was expansive grassland with enormous stores of soil organic matter. The conversion of this vast grassland to row crop agriculture dominated by the soybean-corn rotation, depleted soil carbon and nitrogen stores, caused extensive soil erosion and contributed to pollution of surface and ground water primarily by nitrate derived from fertilizer. Because of their perennial growth habit, extended growing season, and low demand for nutrients, replacement of a portion of this corn-soybean landscape with feedstock crops has the potential to mitigate many of these environmental impacts. To date, there have been no side-by-comparisons of potential ecosystem impacts of feedstock crops with corn, also used in the production of cellulosic ethanol. The objective of the proposed research is to quantify the major pools and fluxes in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and water in large plots of M. x giganteus, switchgrass, restored prairie and corn, and to determine how and on what timescale interactions with soil microbial and insect populations affect these biogeochemical cycles.
