James Robert Price

Chamber and symphonic percussionist Dr. Price has been a member or performed with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; Sinfonia Da Camera; Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra; Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Jazz Orchestra and Renegade Ensemble in the USA; the Camerata-Latinoamericana in Costa Rica, National Symphony Orchestra of Paraguay and the National Symphony Orchestra of El Salvador. In addition, Dr. Price maintains an active schedule as a Jazz freelance percussionist. Dr. Price has been featured marimba or percussion soloist at the Marimba 2010 International Festival and Conference; Contemporary Composer s Music festival; Olivet Nazarene University Day of Percussion Festival; and as showcase performer at the 2009 Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in the USA, I Contemporary Music Festival at the University of Costa Rica and National University in Costa Rica, III International Music Festival at the National University of Asuncion (FADA) in Paraguay, National Symphony Orchestra of El Salvador (various seasons), VII and XIV Internacional Contemporary Music Festival and the 42th Anniversary Arts Festival of the National Center of Arts in El Salvador. His interest in contemporary music has led him to work with American composers Elliott Carter, Zack Browning, Elliott Schwartz, Susan Botti and Latin-American composers Jorge Sarmientos, Marlos Nobre, German Caceres and Manuel de Elias. Dr. Price s work can be heard in the CD Venus Notorious of Inn-Nova Records and Sinfonia Da Camera: Impressions of Albany Records. As an educator Dr. Price has imparted master classes at Olivet Nazarene University; he has been a percussion faculty for the Central American Youth Orchestra of The International Institute of Iberian Music from Spain (JOCCA), and percussion faculty and director of the National Center of Arts Percussion Ensemble. In addition, Dr. Price created the "Wind Band and Pedagogy Seminar" of the National Center of Arts aimed at wind band conductors that work in high schools located at high-risk neighborhoods. Committed to promote artistic education, Dr. Price received a grant from U.N.I.C.E.F to coordinate seminars aimed at training performing and fine arts teachers to work with individuals with disabilities. His article A Performer s Guide to Sarmientos s 'Concierto Para Marimba y Orquesta' was published by Percussive Notes. As an arts administrator Dr. Price served as Provost-Dean of The National Center of Arts which is the leading public visual, performing and applied arts institution of El Salvador. During Dr. Price's tenure as Dean-Provost of the National Center of Arts, he implemented curriculum revisions which led to a significant increase in enrollment to all three schools. Moreover, he established an international visiting artists season and the institution's first hosting of an international festival Youth Orchestra as well as maintaining a full season of activities. He created music programs intended for underprivileged communities through the development of special training seminars in association with international agencies making music and art more accessible to all. Dr. Price holds a DMA in percussion from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While at the University of Illinois he was awarded the Edgard Varèse Percussion Award. In addition, he was a recipient of the Swanson Family Percussion Fellowship (2008-2009) and Creative & Performing Arts Fellowship (2007-2008). Dr. Price holds a Master of Music degree in percussion performance from the University of Minnesota, where he was awarded the prestigious Harvey V. Berneking Graduated Scholarship (2005-2007) and a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance and composition from the University of Costa Rica where he graduated summa cum laude and received the distinction of excellence in performance. Currently Dr. Price is a visiting professor at the National University of Asunción.

The National Center of Arts of El Salvador is the leading public visual, performing and applied arts institution of El Salvador. The School of Music, Theater and Arts is comprised of approximately 80 faculty members and 1000 students. Duties for this position included both administrative and academic activities. Sinfonia da Camera is a professional chamber orchestra affiliated with the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and College of Fine and Applied Arts of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It is dedicated to the excellent presentation of classical chamber orchestra repertoire and other musical works. It presents an annual concert series at the Krannert Center and maintains a national and international presence through touring performances, radio broadcasts and recordings. Sinfonia da Camera cultivates a future audience for classical music through outreach and special performances, and is a major attraction for the campus, community and region.
