  Home gardens as a tool to promote food security, Descrição: The current action-research proposal addresses the issue of food security in rural Haiti through the social-ecological systems represented by the home gardens, based on a case study in Anse-à-Pitres. New methods and indicators will first be developed in order to better understand the complex relations between the social (family economics, exchange networks and their role in family diet) and ecological (species, functions, structure, nutrient cycling) variables that shape the use of home garden to improve food security. Then possible adaptations of existing home gardens that combine the principles of agroecology and traditional local knowledge will be proposed to increase food security for local farmers. Specific objectives (SO) include: 1. Developing a multi-level and multi-scale approach to analyze the interactions between (i) variables from the social-ecological system, (ii) information, food and seed exchange networks and (iii) practices and uses related to the development of home gardens in Anses-à-Pitres; 2. Characterizing the local agroecosystems in relation to their species and associated structural and functional assemblages, plants-soil relationships and nutrient cycling efficiencies and actual yields. Test promising species in term of their growth and survival as well as to the soil-plant relationships; 3. Developing innovative methods for assessing and evaluating food security at the individual, household and town level, as well as the quality of diet and nutrient intakes. Food exchange networks may also be used to assess availability, access and utilization of the food resource from home gardens; 4.   Investigação da produção artesanal de farinha de mandioca como fonte de exposição humana ao chumbo (Pb) no Estado do Pará, Amazônia Brasileira, Descrição: O chumbo (Pb) é um dos metais mais tóxicos. Apesar de muitas fontes de contaminação ambiental por Pb já terem sido identificadas e relatadas na literatura científica (e.g., mineração, indústrias, reciclagem de baterias, tintas contendo Pb, cerâmicas, etc.), novas fontes sempre podem surgir. Recentemente, nosso grupo de pesquisa documentou altos níveis de concentração de Pb em moradores de comunidades ribeirinhas da bacia do rio Tapajós, região oeste do Estado do Pará, na Amazônia brasileira. Segundo nossos dados, nesta região não há fontes industriais de Pb. O processo artesanal de transformação da mandioca em farinha poderia ser uma fonte de exposição humana a este contaminante, visto que as concentrações de Pb na farinha aumentaram após a torração da mandioca em chapas metálicas artesanais. O objetivo geral deste projeto é investigar o processo de produção artesanal de farinha de mandioca como fonte de exposição humana ao Pb, em populações ribeirinhas e urbanas da Bacia do Rio Tapajós, região oeste do Estado do Pará.   Lands and Rights in Troubled Waters (The LAR Project): land-use change, environmental harm and human rights violations in Colombia and Brazil - the case of the Cauca and Tapajos basins, Descrição: Lands and Rights in Troubled Water (LAR) focuses on the conditions, nature and effects of land-use change in the Colombian Cauca and Brazilian Tapajos basins, processes closely connected to the expansion of respectively sugar cane and soy monocultures, growing deforestation, increased commercial large-scale exploitation of mineral resources, and the development of mega-projects using water resources. In Portuguese and Spanish, lar signifies home. The name is chosen because conflicts over natural resources lead to homes being left and lost. The LAR Project, a consortium of academic institutions and NGOs from Brazil, Colombia and The Netherlands, in conjunction with international NGO FIAN International, focuses on understanding and reducing natural resource conflicts in two tropical areas: the Tapajos Valley (Lower Amazon, North Brazil) and the Cauca Valley (between two Andean mountain chains, South-West Colombia). Both areas have a long history of human habitation and natural resource exploitation. Gold and rubber used to attract traders from different directions. Today, not only mineable resources such as gold, but also the land and water of the valleys have become much in demand, for economic exploitations that are ultimately destined for markets elsewhere. In both areas, different conflicts have arisen over natural resource exploitation: not only over access to land and land rights, but also over water (pollution). Characteristic of the different conflicts over natural resources in the two geographical study areas in Brazil and Colombia is the asymmetrical power relations between the main stakeholders: communities, institutions and private actors. Communities in rural and forested areas where governmental control is poor or absent, are relatively weak compared to more powerful (international) businesses, that have much larger financial resources, political connections or backing, knowledge of bureaucratic procedures, and sometimes also access to violent (gun) power. Considering the inequality of arms between stakeholders, and based on southern demand, LAR's first phase adopted a bottom-up approach focusing on the community level: stimulating their internal organisation, increasing their knowledge about their rights and ways to getting access to state institutions. In the (second) follow-up phase, the focus of attention has shifted to a higher level: from intra-community to inter-community: stimulating dialogues between (ethnic) communities, and building networks between communities. In Colombia, where state institutions are less effective, the emphasis is put on monitoring state compliance with ESC-rights. In the (third) top-up phase, we explicitly address the international level, aimed at improving corporate conduct and compliance with international law and norms such as the recently established UN Ruggie Framework. LAR?s activities are conducted by an international and multidisciplinary team.   Food Security, Ice, Climate and Community Health: Climate Change Impacts on Traditional Food Security in Canadian Inuit Communities (Community Health), Descrição: Traditional/country foods are critical resources for physical, as well as mental, social and economic health of individuals and communities across the Arctic. Despite this, shifts in traditional/ country food consumption have been taking place over the past 15 - 20 years related to a variety of changes in northern ecological, social, political and economic systems. Those related to ecological shifts have been in part previously associated with reduced confidence in food safety due to identified threats from environmental contaminants such as mercury and PCBs, and more recently the changes in species availability and accessibility due to shifting climatic conditions. Specifically, climate related changes and variability in the North have been associated with changes in animal, fish and plant population health and distribution, while changes in ice, snow, precipitation regimes, and other environmental factors have the potential to influence human travel and transportation in the North, and thus Inuit access to these wildlife resources. As such, climate change and variability has the potential to influence nutrition and health status among Inuit via impacts on aspects (availability, accessibility and quality) of traditional/country food security. Earlier phases of this project identified both positive and negative changes in the traditional/ country food harvest of Inuit communities in relation to changes and variability in climatic conditions. It was documented that environmental changes are already having impacts on both the availability of wildlife species and hunters' access to them in all regions studied. In some regions, Inuit have reported some influence of climate and environmental change on wildlife access and availability in comparison with the same hunting season in previous years. However, the impacts are not homogenous among all hunters and communities and both individuals and households show differential ability to adapt successfully. Factors such as access to economic resources and equipment, experience, and the nature of the adaptive strategy used appear to influence the success of hunter adaptations. Yet, our current commonly used assessment toos looking at household food insecurity in Inuit regions do not represent this complexity well. As a result, we have decreasing confidence in the accuracy of results from these tools in capturing the full nature of the reality of Inuit food issues.   CoPEH-LAC: Comunidade de Prática sobre a Abordagem Ecossistêmica em Saúde Humana América Latina e no Caribe, Descrição: O projeto CoPEH-LAC tem como objetivo geral dar continuidade na construção da comunidade de prática, a fim de fortalecer o enfoque ecossistêmico em saúde humana (Ecosaúde) para a pesquisa, extensão e políticas na América Latina e no Caribe, e assim, alcançar mudanças duradouras em saúde e em meio ambiente. Os objetivos específicos são: 1. Consolidar os benefícios da COPEH-LAC mediante o fortalecimento e a difusão da pesquisa em Ecosaúde, a intervenção e a vinculação das atividades políticas dentro e entre os nós regionais; 2.   Communauté de pratique canadienne en approches écosystémiques de la santé (CoPEH-Canada), Descrição: CoPEH-Canada é uma equipe de pesquisadoras e pesquisadores canadenses de três universidades (Universidade de Guelph, University of British Columbia, Universidade do Quebec em Montreal) que desenvolveu, com apoio do IDRC, um projeto para criar uma comunidade de prática em abordagem Eco-saúde no Canadá.   Projeto CARUSO: Exposição alimentar ao mercúrio e saúde humana e dos ecossistemas na Amazônia, Descrição: O projeto CARUSO é baseado numa abordagem ecossistêmica à saúde humana e é realizado por equipe transdisciplinar de pesquisadores brasileiros e canadenses desde 1994.
