Maurizio Meloni

doctorate in Social Theory from Università degli Studi di Catania Italy (2004). Has experience in Sociology, European Philosophy and Science and Technology Studies I am a social theorist with a background in Continental philosophy and a strong interest in the historical, political, and sociological aspects of the life-sciences, neuroscience and the new emerging fields of epigenetics and postgenomics in particular. After completing my PhD in Italy, I have been awarded several prestigious postdoctoral fellowships, both European (2004, DAAD; 2005, OEAD; 2007/2008, Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin; 2008/2009 European Neuroscience and Society Network/ESF, at the Bios Centre, LSE and the Cesames Centre, University of Paris V) and American (2006/2007 Fulbright Research Scholar at the Committee on Social Thought, University of Chicago). I started my work at the Institute for Science and Society at the University of Nottingham (UK) in June 2009 as a Marie Curie Fellow (Intra-European Fellowship), funded for two years by the Marie Curie Actions/People Program of the EU (FP7-PEOPLE-IEF-2008), for a project titled "The Emergence of a Biosociety" (completed in May 2011). From June 2011 I was awarded a new three year research grant titled "The Seductive Power of the Neurosciences: An Intellectual Genealogy", with a partial financial contribution by the same EU (European Reintegration Grant, FP7-PEOPLE-2010-RG). I am the author of one book in Italian on Freud and Philosophy (2005), and am currently working on a second book on "social theory in a postgenomic age" (for Palgrave, expected 2014) Since my appointment in Nottingham in June 2009, I have published 11 peer reviewed articles or chapters on biology and society from the point of view of social theory, STS, and intellectual history (14 in total in my postdoctoral career, + two authored book including a second forthcoming in 2015 for Palgrave). The topics of some of my most recent publications include: Social theory in a postgenomic age (Sociology, in press); the change in style in evolutionary literature from the individualistic and utilitarian literature of the 1970s to the current prosocial view (History of the Human Sciences, 2013: article uploaded); genetics and philosophy (review article in New Genetics and Society, 2013); the growing intellectual authority of the neurosciences for social and political theory (in Neuroscience and Political Theory: Thinking the Body Politic, Routledge, 2012); biopolitics, European philosophy and social theory (Economy and Society, 2010); neuroscience and the biologization of human identity (in the edited volume Neurocultures, 2011); political aspects of the naturalism anti-naturalism debate in European social thought (Telos, 2011); philosophical and sociological critiques of the neurosciences (Subjectivity, 2011); and, in Italian, the re-conceptualisation of the notion of pleasure in contemporary neurosciences in contrast with alternative views in bioethics (Chapter for Guerini, 2010); and the neurosciences and the history of psychoanalysis: conflicts and overlaps (the Rivista Italiana di Psicoanalisi, 2010).
