Michela Mulas
Michela Mulas received the Laurea degree (M.Sc.) in Chemical Engineering in 2001 and in 2006 the Dottorato di Ricerca (Ph.D, Eng) in Industrial Engineering from the University of Cagliari (Italy). In 2007, she joined the Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) first as post-doctoral researcher in the Laboratory of Process Control and Automation at the Department of Chemical Engineering and then, in 2010, the Water Engineering Research Group at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In 2014, she joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at Federal University of Campina Grande as post-doctoral researcher under the program Bolsa Jovens Talentos - Ciência sem fronteiras funded by CAPES. Since 2016, she is a professor at the Federal University of Ceará at the Department of Teleinformatic Engineering. Her research interest focuses on model-based process control, soft-sensors and fault diagnosis theory, in general, and their application on wastewater treatment plants, in particular. She is member of the IFAC, International Federation of Automatic Control, Technical Committee 8.4 on Biosystems and Bioprocesses.

Advanced control technologies for wastewater treatment plants, Descrição: The project aims to develop innovative automation technologies for monitoring and supervising, controlling and optimising dynamic systems in real time. Given the fundamental role of sewage treatment plants in protecting the environment, health, education and the economy of the country, these plants will be considered as a test-bench for the proposed methodologies. The work results in a multidisciplinary effort and collaboration with academic partners at national and international level. The possible integration of multidisciplinary competences with industrial partners and administrators of municipal and industrial treatment plants represents one of the main aspects of this proposal. With a greater understanding of the process and the realisable benefits from plant automation, the methodologies developed will help sewage treatment plants to improve economic efficiency, under strict environmental restrictions. Control4Reuse: Process control technologies for water reuse, Descrição: Control4Reuse aims at researching and developing technologies for managing treated water resources. The optimization of water treatment and reclamation systems in an integrated manner is foreseen as a sustainable solution to improve the reuse of this valuable water resource. The emphasis of the project is on the reuse of wastewater in specific agricultural and industrial sectors. From a technological viewpoint, the scope of the project is casted within a system monitoring and control framework, with specific activities ranging from the supervision and integration of sensor information/data, mathematical modelling of the processes and the design of advanced control strategies. DIAMOND: Advanced data management and informatics for optimum operation and control of wastewater treatment plants, Descrição: Nowadays most of the EU countries treat practically the totality of the volume of urban waste water (WW) generated. However, a deep look at the performance of most of the existing wastewater treatment facilities (WWTP) evidences that significant steps forward can still be given in terms of effluent quality, process robustness and operational costs. One of the main technical limitations for optimizing plant operation some years ago was the lack of reliable measuring devices. At present, new and more reliable on-line sensors are available and the main limitation for the optimal operation of WWTPs is, clearly, the great difficulty to properly manage all the heterogeneous, incomplete and, sometimes inconsistent data of the WWTPs. WWTPs daily manage thousands of data from all points of the plant. The likelihood that data errors and/or faults occur has consequently highly increased. Also, unexpected situations occurring in the plants make sensors not fully reliable yet sending incorrect data to the data management systems. Using these data for real-time operation and control activities could lead to a drastic deterioration of the wastewater treatment efficiency. The appropriate processing and management of the data available in a WWTP nowadays exceed the capacity of the staff of the WWTP, limiting the use of the information available for diagnosis and operation tasks. Advanced on-line data fault detection and monitoring tools could alert operators from sensors showing unrealistic or incorrect data whereas, real-time data processing and adequation tools could make data more reliable. Project DIAMOND aims to achieve a model of excellence in the management of wastewater treatment systems by addressing the design, development, implementation and validation of new advanced data management, monitoring and control algorithms and tools for supporting the optimum operation of WWTPs. AutomAQUARes: Research on automation technologies for wastewater treatment plants in the era of data explosion, Descrição: AutomAqua dedicates the efforts to the monitoring and control needs of three sectors within the water cycle: (1) industrial and (2) urban wastewater treatment systems; and (3) desalination systems. In the era of data explosion, AutomAqua exploits them in combination with modelling, optimization and control design tools to deliver novel products like software sensors, controllers, and data management systems. Data-derived soft-sensors, process modeling and control in biological wastewater treatment, Descrição: In the present project, an extensive literature review focusing on the data-derived software sensors (i.e. soft-sensors) proposed for biological wastewater treatment has been prepared. In particular, variable prediction, process monitoring and hardware sensor fault detection tasks were concentrated on. The most typical methods used for soft- sensor design in the reviewed studies include multivariate, neural networks and neuro- fuzzy techniques. The main purpose of the study was to collect information on the soft-sensor applications in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Besides of that, a brief overview of the steps and methods of the data-driven soft-sensor design and the special characteristics of WWTP operation data were provided. The main focus was in the case studies using Activated Sludge Processes (ASPs) which are commonly applied both for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. In addition, the definition of control strategies for the biological process was studied by means of process modeling and using real-world operation data. We focused especially on the ASP aiming at the definition of different control structure to minimize the operating costs. EfeSus: Effective Sewer condition management Using online Sensor information, Descrição: EfeSus deals with specifying renovation and maintenance strategies for sewer networks. The approach is to collect all available data and combine them using a risk analysis framework. Within the project, a software prototype will be created which allows automated treatment and analysis of all network-related data.
