Eco-friendly feeding strategies for enhancing production of Amazonid fish through sustainable aquaculture and livelihood improvement of resource poor aquafarmers, Descrição: The main aim of the project is to standerdise 2 feeding strategis and extend them to aquafarmers of Amzon region. 1. Inducing in situ periphyton (attached mass of natural feed) development by providing native substrates in the ponds which becomes an additional source of natural feed, thereby enhancing fish growth, reducing the need for artificial feeding. Fishes that have a mouth suitable for browsing can directly make use of periphyton. Eg. Jaraqui (Semaprochilodus spp.), Curimatã (Prochilodus spp.), etc. Periphyton-based aquaculture is an environmental friendly and economically viable technology. 2. Development of artificial diets with local ingredients, incorporating common salt as a growth enhancing additive. Freshwater fish species spend considerable amount of energy to obtain ions from water, sodium being one that plays an important role in osmoregulation. If salt is provided through diets, fish obtain sodium directly and therefore, the energy spent for filtering it is saved which gets channeled for growth. These 2 strategies should be very useful in the culture of local fish species.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador / Alexandre Honczaryk - Integrante / Jorge Daniel Indrusiak Fim - Integrante / Flávio Augusto Leão da Fonseca - Integrante / César Augusto Oishi - Integrante / Elizabeth Affonso - Integrante., Financiador(es): Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas - Auxílio financeiro / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - Bolsa.

Periphyton based aquaculture: A low cost feeding technology for increasing pond fish production, Descrição: The project evaluated different biodegradable (bamboo, sugarcane bagasse, palm leaf, paddy straw and arecanut leaf-sheath) and non-degradable (earthen tile, ceramic tile, PVC pipe, waste vehicle tyre and glass plate) substrates for periphyton growth in manured tanks. The phytoperiphyton genera encountered on the substrates belonged mainly to Chlorophyceae (14 genera), followed by Cyanophyceae (2 genera), Chrysophyceae (1 genus), Bacillariophyceae (1 genus) and Dinophyceae (1 genus). Nauplius, Keratella, Diaptomus, Cyclops, Moina, Chironomus and insect eggs were the zooplankton encountered. Periphytic dry matter, ash, ash-free dry matter and plankton density on substrates and water showed a general increase with respect to time. PVC (0.972 mg/cm2), glass (0.913 mg/cm2) and bamboo (0.897 mg/cm2) had higher periphytic dry matter. Growth of carps in the presence and absence of substrates was assessed and it was observed that periphyton induced significantly higher growth of carps. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador., Financiador(es): Indian Council Of Agricultural Research - Auxílio financeiro.

Estuarine fish stock assessment: An empirical application of Parfish, Descrição: The major objective of this project was to apply Parfish model to estuarine fish stock assessment. The catches of the sampled fishers exclusively fishing in the Nethravathy estuary, Mangalore were recorded for 4 major groups of fish viz. lady fish, mullets (mala and para), catfish and others. The daily catch data was generated for one full year. The percentage share of each species to total catch of individual fisher was estimated to understand the importance of individual fishes across the seasons. Risk factors associated with fishing was measured using simple statistical methods and it was found that the most efficient groups of fishers are exposed to higher risk factors. Resource use conflicts among different fishing groups were evident. The fishers normally use hook and line for harvesting lady fish and catfish. This affects the catches of fishers using other nets, leading to resource use conflicts. The small hook and line fishers collect baits (small shrimps in shallow waters). This affects the shrimp fishery harvested by other fishers. The fishers fish for around 40 days during the rainy season and 200 days during the rest of the year. The total and average monthly landings of mullets showed drastic reduction in the catch, compared to earlier years. The mean monthly quantity landed declined from 5.46 tonnes to 1.80 tonnes, landings being negligible during summer months. During rainy season (June, July, August) the average catch was 4 kg /day which declined by half during the remaining period of the year. In order to maximize the catch, the fishers have to carry at least three nets, varying in mesh size from 24 to 55mm. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador / Ramachandra Bhat - Integrante., Financiador(es): Department for International Development - Auxílio financeiro.

Carp alteration as a means of containing shrimp disease in coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Descrição: This twin centre collaborative project for the east and west coasts evaluated the possibility of alternating the species cultured in order to contain the white spot disease in shrimp. Generally, 2 crops of shrimp (4 months duration each) are raised per year after the rainy season. During the rainy season, culture of different species of fishes was carried out in shrimp culture ponds. Mullet (Mugil cephalus) and Milkfish (Chanos chanos) weighing on an average 4-6 g were cultured together in the east coast stocking @ 6000 and 4000/ha respectively in a pond prepared fertilizing with urea and super phosphate. After 125 days of culture, mullets attained an average weight of 173 g with 76% survival, whereas milkfish reached an average size of 263 g with 80% survival. In the subsequent shrimp crop, there was no WSSV attack. In the west coast, common carp (av.wt. 120 g) was grown in a shrimp pond stocking at 5000/ha, prepared fertilizing with poultry manure. Fish were fed on the traditional feed mixture of oil cake and rice bran as supplemental feed. The fish grew to an average to 560 g after 4 months of rearing. Subsequent crops of shrimp during the year were not affected by white spot. The results of the two studies indicate the benefit of alteration of species in containing WSSV in shrimp culture. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador / S. Improvisation of on-farm feeds for juvenile and sub-adult carps through incorporation of plant and animal ingredients, Descrição: Initially, a study was made to estimate the contribution of natural food to carp growth in ponds. Then, the commonly employed artificial diet of a 1:1 mixture of rice bran and oil cake was improvised through inclusion of small quantities of local protein sources like horse gram, soya flour, etc. at different levels. Pelleted test diets formulated were fed to indigenous and exotic carps for 90 days to assess their influence on growth, survival, body composition, digestive enzyme profile and feed efficiency. The test diets improved growth in all the cases. Survival of fish ranged between 80 and 90%. Higher PER was recorded with test diets. Variation in carcass composition due to feeds was observed. Protein level was significantly higher in fish from the different treatments; similarly fat content was also higher, being significantly different between treatments. The diets affected digestive enzyme activity (protease, amylase and lipase) positively both in the intestine and hepatopancreas. Partial replacement of rice bran and groundnut oil cake from the control diet with native proteins marginally increased the cost of the diets. The superior growth obtained however, more than compensates for the cost increment. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador / L.M. Shrimp and fish health management, Descrição: Unregulated shrimp culture activity along the east and west coasts of India led to large scale outbreak of diseases in the 90s, particularly the white spot disease. Being a viral disease, it can not be contained easily. Through this project disease diagnostics were developed to forecast WSSV occurrence. Epizootic ulcerative syndrome is another major disease that affects both freshwater and brackishwater fish. Histology and monoclonal antibody was made use of in the diagnosis of this disease. The approach of best management practice was advocated to the farmers, based on the results of the project as an effective means of checking the spread of diseases in culture.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador / Shankar, Kalkuli M - Integrante / C.V. The potential of periphyton based aquaculture in South Asia, Descrição: This multi-partner project involving 4 countries (UK, The Netherlands, Bangladesh and India) was mainly focused on developing a cheaper alternative to providing artificial feed in fish culture. Initially studies were conducted to assess the effectiveness of different substrates for periphyton production. Bamboo was found to be the best substrate. Using mahseer (Tor khudree), fringe-lipped carp (Labeo fimbriatus) and hybrid red tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus Oreochromis niloticus) as the test species, the effects of periphyton, supplemental feeding(a fishmeal-based 35% protein diet fed at 5% body weight per day) and their combination were investigated. Net production of mahseer with substrates was 41 and 51% higher, while that of fringe-lipped carp and red tilapia was 43 and 75% and112 and 116% higher, respectively, under low (98 poles/25m2) and high (196 poles/25m2) bamboo density. Production with a combination of substrates and feeding was higher by 71 and 54% in mahseer, 85 and 78% in fringe-lipped carp and 152 and 142% in tilapia (low and high bamboo density, respectively) than that in the control. There was a significant effect of substrate density on the survival of mahseer and fringe-lipped carp. Without feeding, the higher substrate density improved yield only slightly and with feeding, no improvement was recorded, suggesting that at the fish stocking density used, the carrying capacity of the periphyton was never exceeded and the efficiency of supplemental feed was drastically reduced with high substrate density. In an on-farm polyculture trial with catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio), using sugarcane bagasse as substrate, total fish production of 8.08 kg/100 m2/180 days was obtained without feed and periphyton (control). Feeding alone increased yield by 20%. Bagasse substrate alone increased yields by 38, 61 and 62% in the 39, 78 and 156 bundles/100 m2 treatments, respectively, while the combination of feeding and. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador / B. Effect of different dosages of Nutripro-aqua on growth and body composition of fishes, Descrição: Growth promoters when incorporated at low levels reduce the cost in culture fisheries, by enhancing growth rate of fish and by reducing the duration of culture. A large number of non-hormonal growth promoters are available commercially. Nutripro-aqua is one such growth promoter. Its effect on growth and body composition of catla (Catla catla) was studied by feeding graded levels (2.5, 5 and 7.5%) of Nutripro-aqua to fingerlings stocked at 1 m-2 for 120 days. Test diets were prepared by incorporating Nutripro-aqua to the fishmeal based control diet. Significant increase in growth was recorded in the treatments as compared to the control. Growth enhancement was brought about by increased digestive enzyme activity and higher utilization f the test diets. The growth promoter affected body composition positively. In another study, Nutripro-aqua supplemented (2.5, 5 and 7.5%) pelleted diets were fed over a rearing period of 135 days to Macrobrachium rosenbergii juveniles (av. wt. 4 g) and their growth performance was compared with that of the control. The final weight gain of prawn fed the test diets was significantly higher; highest weight gain was recorded under 7.5% treatment; positive influence of Nutripro-aqua on food conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio was observed only under this treatment. Production increased with every level of dietary incorporation of the feed additive. Muscle RNA/DNA ratio steadily increased with increase in Nutripro-aqua supplementation. Higher protein and lower lipid content was recorded in the muscle of prawn receiving graded levels of the feed additive. Enhanced digestive enzyme activity was found in the treated prawn; protease and amylase activity was higher in the digestive tract, while lipase activity was higher in the hepatopancreas. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador., Financiador(es): Vetcare, India - Auxílio financeiro.

Standardization of breeding of pond-raised mahseer, Tor khudree, Descrição: The common practice of breeding mahseer is by collecting the brood from the rivers during the rainy season and spawning artificially through hypophysation. Large scale production of seed necessitates hatchery technology involving pond-raising of brood. The project standardized the breeding of pond-raised brood. A protocol was developed for raising the broodstock employing special diets and HCG treatment. Two different hormones (pituitary extract, Ovaprim) were tested for inducing breeding and the dosages standardized. Use of Ovaprim was recommended as it involves only single injection for both the sexes, reducing handling stress.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador / B. A study on the culture and breeding of Tor spp. available in Karnataka, Descrição: The main objective of this project was to develop diets for use in the culture of mahseer (Tor khudree), a well known riverine sport and food fish of India. Initially, the protein requirement was investigated feeding pure diets containing graded protein levels (25, 30, 35, 40 and 45%). Growth was the best and similar with 30 and 35% protein levels. Further, practical diets containing 30% protein were developed substituting fish meal with native protein sources like shrimp waste, soybean meal, silkworm pupa, etc. Diets with native proteins induced good growth, it being not significantly different from that of the control. The effect of protein and steroid hormones (HCG, 17α-methyl testosterone) on the growth of fish was also investigated and positive results obtained. Incorporation of sardine oil at graded levels (3, 9, 6 and 12%) into the diets improved growth of fish and digestive enzyme activity. . , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: / Mestrado profissional: (4) . , Integrantes: Perar Keshavanath - Coordenador., Financiador(es): Indian Council Of Agricultural Research - Auxílio financeiro., Número de produções C, T & A: 3
