Carlos Filipe Moreira e Silva

Received a five years diploma degree and MSc degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal, in 2005 and 2010, respectively. In 2015 he also received a PhD degree in Teleinformatics Engineering from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Brazil. Since 2006, Carlos Silva has been a researcher in several European projects, such as WINNER II (system requirements for beyond 3rd generation wireless networks), FUTON (RRM for wireless and optical networks), and COGEU (cognitive radio systems for efficient use and sharing of TVWS in the European context). Currently, he has a postdoc position at the Wireless Telecom Research Group (GTEL), Brazil, where he manages GTEL's team in the European-Brazilian project FUTEBOL (federated union of telecommunications research facilities for an UE-Brazil open laboratory) and also works in cooperation projects with Ericsson Research. His main research interests include: spectrum usage optimization, scarcity and management, namely related with TV White Spaces (TVWS), Licensed Shared Access (LSA), Internet of Things (IoT), and Device-to-Device (D2D) communications; testbed experimentation; and architectural aspects of the future 5G networks.

    COGnitive radio systems for efficient sharing of TV white spaces in EUropean context (COGEU), Descrição: COGEU is a composite of technical, business, and regulatory/policy domains, with the objective of taking advantage of the TV digital switch-over (or analog switch-off) by developing cognitive radio systems that leverage the favorable propagation characteristics of the TVWS through the introduction and promotion of real-time secondary spectrum trading and the creation of new spectrum commons regime. COGEU will also define new methodologies for TVWS equipment certification and compliance addressing coexistence with the DVB-T/H European standard. At the technical level the mail goals are to: Design, implement and demonstrate enabling technologies based on cognitive radio to support mobile applications over TVWS for spectrum sharing business models; and Quantify the impact of TVWS devices on DVB-T receivers and define methodologies for TVWS equipment certifications and compliance in the European regulatory context. At the business models level the mail goal is to: Investigate business models enabling innovative wireless services which increase spectrum utilization through the exploitation of TVWS based on spectrum commons and secondary market regimes.     Fibre Optic Networks for Distributed, Extendible Heterogeneous Radio Architectures and Service Provisioning (FUTON), Descrição: The FUTON project aims to research, develop and validate a flexible architecture for wireless systems based on the joint processing of the radio signals from distinct remote antenna units and supported by a transparent fibre infrastructure. This architecture will enable the high bit rates targeted in the broadband component of future wireless systems and will provide a framework for the integration of heterogeneous wireless system.     Wireless World Initiative New Radio (WINNER II), Descrição: Wireless World Initiative New Radio is a consortium of 41 partners co-ordinated by Nokia Siemens Networks working towards enhancing the performance of mobile communication systems. The improvements of radio transmission to be explored by WINNER are crucial for enabling new mobile services and applications anytime and anywhere. Our challenge is to make mobile communication systems more adaptable to user needs.
