  Non-traditional Knowledge and Communication (http://r2p.herts.ac.uk/ntkc/index.html), Descrição: The UK has been one of the first countries to campaign research in the creative and cultural industries (CCI), especially in the area known as practice-led or practice-based research. Thus it has taken a leading role from which other countries such as Sweden have been seeking to learn. However, ongoing debates about the variable quality and consistency of research funding applications, outcomes, and education indicate a lack of fundamental research that the field needs to overcome in order to maintain its leadership. Our proposed program of research will investigate the characteristic but problematic area of non-traditional knowledge and knowledge communication, thereby providing robust foundations for CCI research and making a contribution to improving quality and consistency of, and ensuring UK leadership in, CCI research. This project addresses the problems that arise for the production of academic research within CCI. The principal problems are the relationship between creative practice and the requirements and standards of the academy; and the nature of knowledge and communication of research that contains elements of practice. A criterion-based approach will be used so that a robust academic research ontology can be developed for CCI which includes non-traditional forms of knowledge and communication. The ontology will enable the identification, differentiation and evaluation of academic research in CCI and facilitate the development of policy and strategy for furthering research as distinct from professional practice. The response to this question will produce the main outcome described below.   The Practice-based Research Ontology Project (http://r2p.herts.ac.uk/ardp/pbrontology.html), Descrição: The ar-dp network and its related projects address the central question: Is academic research in areas of design practice in some way different from dominant models of academic research in other disciplines? It assumes that Practice-based Research (PbR), regardless of perhaps requiring specific definitions of core academic concepts and models for the investigation of its themes, is a subcategory of academic research. As a type of academic research, PbR should adopt the same fundamental definition of what research is, even if the terms and models used in the investigation differ from the ones currently in use in academic research. A response to the central question involves the definition of the ontology of PbR and is being investigated in two simultaneous parts: the Swedish Architecture Theses project, which is funded by the Swedish Institute and conducted in collaboration with Lund University s Institute of Architecture and Built Environment, and this project (PbR Ontology) which is conducted at the University of Hertfordshire. The Swedish part focuses on PbR in architecture and considers the academic production of the Swedish architectural community by observing their sample of doctoral theses.   Academic research in areas of design practice (http://r2p.herts.ac.uk/ardp/index.html), Descrição: The ar-dp project is essentially a networking initiative which creates and facilitates academic collaboration across disciplines, institutions and countries in areas of design practice such as architecture, design and the arts in general. Currently, the network hosts collaborative activities between the UK, Sweden and Brazil in the form of postdoctoral research projects, joint bilingual publication projects, international exchange workshops and collaborative bid development.
