Every Drop Counts: The One Million Cistern Program and the Diluted Development of Semi-arid Northeast Brazil, Descrição: Having regular access to water positively transforms the lives of people living in water-short regions of the world. The One Million Cistern Project (P1MC) is a development program designed to provide one million households with a rainwater catchment system called a cistern in, semi-arid Northeast Brazil. Since 1999, the program has constructed over 300,000 cisterns and claims to address several of the drastic social and economic inequalities found in the Northeast region of Brazil. In its attempt to promote coexistence with the semi-arid environment, P1MC has established an ambitious, yet innovative endeavor. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the significance of P1MC as it attempts to initiate a process that allows people to transform traditional patterns of structural inequality found in the region. By offering an alternative form of access to water the program has transformed lives, however, this unique development program is inherently embedded in the same structures it seeks to address and in some cases actually reinforces them.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa.
