  PARAFISIO: Computação Paralela, Metalinguagem XML e Servidor Web: Soluções para a neurofisiologia e a eletrofisiologia cardíaca computacionais, Descrição: Os processos biofísicos envolvidos nos fenômenos de propagação elétrica no coração são extremamente complexos, de natureza altamente não-linear e envolvem múltiplas escalas, desde a nanométrica movimentação iônica e conformação dinâmica de proteínas que atravessam a membrana celular até os efeitos estruturais e geométricos do coração. A modelagem computacional tem sido uma alternativa promissora para a compreensão desses fenômenos. Os modelos matemáticos computacionais permitem que diferentes informações extraídas de experimentos realizados nas diferentes escalas físicas e que estudam diferentes componentes e mecanismos isolados sejam combinadas para gerar uma visão da funcionalidade do sistema como um todo. A alta complexidade desses fenômenos biofísicos é naturalmente refletida nos modelos e simuladores modernos da neurofisiologia e eletrofisiologia cardíaca. Os modelos matemáticos descrevem sistemas não-lineares de equações diferenciais parciais (EDPs) com milhões de incógnitas e de difícil resolução numérica. Apesar das dificuldades, as aplicações desses modelos têm justificado os mesmos. Os simuladores tem auxiliado no desenvolvimento e testes de novas drogas, de novos equipamentos médicos [4] e de novas técnicas de diagnóstico não invasivo [5] para diversas enfermidades. Propomos a configuração de um servidor Web que permitirá o uso do simulador de eletrofisiologia cardíaca desenvolvido pelo nosso grupo, por outros centros de pesquisa de áreas correlatas. A tecnologia de cluster de computadores e de computação distribuída são utilizadas através da paralelização do simulador.
