  Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia da Criosfera, Descrição: The main objective of the Brazilian National Institute for Cryospheric Sciences (INCT da Criosfera) is to integrate the national scientific community dedicated to studies of the different components of the ice mass around the planet (antarctic sea ice, glaciers, and the antarctic ice sheet, andean glaciers, permafrost) and its response to climate change. The actions focus in Antarctica and the Andes through researches on the impact of climate change on the glaciers and its consequences to sea water level, a reconstruction of the paleoclimate and atmospheric chemistry through the analysis of ice cores, evaluations of the role of sea ice and ice shelves in atmospheric and oceanic circulations, as well as the response of permafrost (frozen soil) to climate change, and an investigation of the connections between the polar regions and the south-american environment. The latter topic includes the investigation of the processes of oceanic-atmospheric interaction in the southern Atlantic Ocean and Southern Ocean, as well as its impact to weather and climate forecasts in the south and southeast of Brazil. In this second phase, the actions of the INCT will also monitor and evaluate the socioeconomic consequences of the rapid reduction of arctic sea ice, as well as possible connections to environmental changes in the southern Atlantic Ocean while expanding the Institute's structure to the integrate a biosciences group, which will dedicate to the search and study of extremophiles on the ice cover of the planet. Specifically, the INCT answers to the objectives of two thematic programs of the Action Plan for Brazilian Antarctic Research prepared by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation for the 2013-2022 period: (1) The role of the criosphere on Earth systems, and its interactions with South America, and (2) Climate change and the Southern Ocean. The specific objectives of the Institute are to: Investigate connections between the atmosphere-criosphere-antarctic ocean system and meteorological and climatic processes in South America (with emphasis on Brazil) and in the Southern Atlantic Ocean; Explore the effects of anthropic activity and its influence in atmospheric chemistry in the higher latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere; Investigate the relations between antarctic sea ice extension variability and climatic evolution in the Southern Hemisphere; Model and elaborate scenarios of the response of the criosphere to climatic variation in the next 100 years and the consequences to the brazilian environment, specially the effects over cold front dynamics and sea water level; and, Integrate data from ice cores, glacial surface and subaqueous sediments, glacial dynamics, and geomorphological observations which will expand the knowledge on the advances and retractions of antarctic glaciers through the Quaternary. Meanwhile, the oceanographic sciences associated with the INCT will focus on: the study of the role of the Southern Ocean in the balance of the temperature and water of the planet; monitoring of the variability of the Southern Ocean component in the Meridional Overturning Cell (MOC) of the worldwide oceanic circulation; the investigation of the role of the oceans in the stability of the antarctic ice sheet and the consequences to the rise of sea level; and, the investigation of sea ice cover variability in the Southern Ocean.
