Advancing equity in Brazilian protected area management, Descrição: Conservation's gold standard is to achieve positive social, economic and biodiversity outcomes, and therefore major conservation organisations now place social equity at the centre of their strategies. This collaboration will bring together expertise in social and ecological aspects of conservation science to assess and advance equity in protected areas in Brazil. The proposed work consists of 4 main parts: 1) co-production of knowledge on ecological and social change in the Catimbau National Park; 2) the first implementation in Brazil of a framework for assessing and advancing equity in protected areas; 3) community-based workshops to support the development of plans to enhance equity in communities in ways compatible with conservation; and 4) a capacity-building workshop to disseminate this framework, and lessons from its implementation, to conservation practitioners. We expect to positively impact the lives of vulnerable rural populations in the study area, and across Brazil, through 2 principal mechanisms. Firstly, by working with local communities to share knowledge generated by scientists and local knowledge of impacts of human activities in the Caatinga, we will help promote the implementation and continuation of more sustainable practices, making communities more resilient to impacts of climate change, and protecting livelihoods and food security in the medium-long term. Secondly, we will build capacity among conservation practitioners to recognise key equity issues, advance equitable participation and sharing of costs and benefits of protected area management, and identify potential solutions compatible with effective conservation. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Stephen Mark Redpath - Coordenador / Karen Mustin - Integrante / Neil Dawson - Integrante / William Douglas de Carvalho - Integrante / Marcelo Tabarelli - Integrante / Enrico Bernard - Integrante.
