  Spatial ecology of fear (or, how predation risk shapes seascapes), Descrição: By linking ecological theory with freely-available Google Earth satellite imagery, landscape-scale footprints of behavioural interactions between predators and prey can be observed remotely. A Google Earth image survey of the lagoon habitat at Heron Island within Australia s Great Barrier Reef revealed distinct halo patterns within algal beds surrounding patch reefs. Ground truth surveys confirmed that, as predicted, algal canopy height increases with distance from reef edges. A grazing assay subsequently demonstrated that herbivore grazing was responsible for this pattern. In conjunction with recent behavioural ecology studies, these findings demonstrate that herbivores collective antipredator behavioural patterns can shape vegetation distributions on a scale clearly visible from space. By using sequential Google Earth images of specific locations over time, this technique could potentially allow rapid, inexpensive remote monitoring of cascading, indirect effects of predator removals (e.g., fishing; hunting) and/or recovery and reintroductions (e.g., marine or terrestrial reserves) nearly anywhere on earth. . , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Osmar José Luiz Júnior - Coordenador / Joshua Simon Madin - Integrante / Elizabeth M.   Macroecological traits driving recruitment of tropical reef fishes in temperate Australia: understanding and predicting changes in temperate fish communities caused by global warming, Descrição: One of the most pervasive effects of current global climate change is the shift of species geographical ranges. Polar species are under threat due to their shrinking environment and tropical species are expanding their ranges toward temperate regions. On the eastern coast of New South Wales, recent research has detected a significant increase in the sea surface temperature on temperate rocky reefs. As a result of this temperature increase, tropical reef fishes brought south by the Eastern Australian Current as larvae are for the first time overwintering , enabling them to persist in temperate rocky reef habitats as settled juveniles. The research proposed here will primarily explore the biological and ecological traits of tropical reef fishes that favour the expansion of their ranges southwards. Such knowledge will allow us to understand and predict which species have a greater potential to recruit in temperate rocky reefs given current and projected climate warming trends. Secondarily, the research will assess the impact of potential reef fish invaders on the local fish assemblages by comparing niche breadth (based on body-size, depth preference, habitat specialization and trophic category) of invading and resident species.   Relationships among ecological traits, dispersal and geographic ranges of tropical reef fishes, Descrição: Tropical reef fishes are characterized by a pelagic life-history stage as larvae and a demersal lifestyle as adults. Pelagic larvae are subject to oceanic dispersal, with profound consequences for demography and management. However, because pelagic larval stage is largely elusive, our understanding of the factors governing dispersal and consequently their conservation management is limited. The aim of this thesis was to broaden our understanding of the long-distance dispersal of reef fishes by exploring the role species-level traits play on the processes that maintain species connectivity and geographic range size. I used numerous reef fish species trait databases in combination with statistical modelling to show that adult-biology traits consistently estimated species dispersal ability better than larval traits. This thesis highlights the importance of adults-traits for dispersal of individuals over unfavourable areas for instance, rafting among floating substrates for crossing oceanic waters, and broad habitat use for crossing stretches of coastlines without reefs (Chapter 1). A close examination of species that associate with floating rafts demonstrated that such association depends on specific ecological traits benthic affinity, schooling behaviour, broad habitat use, and body size rather than arising from accidental associations and chance dispersal (Chapter 3). It was also showed that three adult-biology traits adult body size, schooling behaviour, and nocturnal activity are strong predictors of geographic range size and range expansion, presumably because they influence colonization success of new areas after dispersal (Chapters 1 and 5). Based on these trait-dispersal relationships, I then showed that the invasive Indo-Pacific Lionfish, despite bearing all the traits associated with crossing the Amazon-Orinoco barrier, is yet to be recorded in the Southwestern Atlantic (Chapter 2). Therefore, highlighting that directionality of barrier crossing must also be incorporated into trait-based estimates of dispersal. Finally, I described the recent appearance of an Indo-Pacific reef fish species in the southwestern Atlantic (Chapter 4), and showed that traits linked with natural long-distance dispersal by rafting may be an alternative hypothesis to human assisted introductions.   Composição e estrutura da comunidade de peixes recifais em relação a quatro variáveis ambientais no Parque Estadual Marinho da Laje de Santos, Estado de São Paulo, Descrição: O Parque Estadual Marinho da Laje de Santos localiza-se na costa sudeste do Brasil a 36 km da cidade de Santos, Estado de São Paulo. O Parque consiste uma pequena ilha (Laje de Santos) com vários parcéis rochosos submersos. O substrato é composto por rochas graníticas cobertas por algas e várias espécies de invertebrados. Desde 1993, foi declarada como área de proteção marinha e desde então o local é de particular interesse, pois é a única área totalmente fechada para a pesca na região mais povoada e desenvolvida do país. Uma lista com 196 espécies de peixes recifais registradas é apresentada para o Parque Estadual Marinho da Laje de Santos. A maioria das espécies tem ocorrência comum a todo o Atlântico Ocidental tropical ou ocorre nos dois lados do Oceano Atlântico. Uma parte menor das espécies tem distribuição em comum com os recifes rochosos temperados da Patagônia ou é endêmica ao Sudeste do Brasil. Moringua edwardsi, Antennarius multiocellatus, Scorpaena dispar, Aulostomus strigosus, Lutjanus buccanella, Mulloidichthys martinicus and Halichoeres penrosei tem aqui seu limite merional de distribuição estendido ao Estado de São Paulo. Há uma clara diferença na contribuição dos fatores abióticos para a estruturação da comunidade de peixes recifais. A profundidade foi o fator que mais influenciou a riqueza de espécies e abundância de indivíduos, apresentação uma clara distinção ambiental entre raso e fundo, com um decréscimo da riqueza e abundância conforme o aumento da profundidade. A complexidade do habitat também foi um fator de influência na comunidade, sendo a riqueza e abundância correlacionada com maior complexidade. Entretanto, esta relação só foi significativa na menor profundidade avaliada. A exposição às ondas não se correlacionou com nenhum dos descritores da comunidade utilizados neste estudo. Aparentemente os efeitos do hidrodinamismo em recifes rochosos se manifesta em escalas espaciais maiores entre a costa e ilhas com diferentes distâncias da costa. Espécies de diferentes categorias tróficas não respondem da mesma maneira a estes fatores. Herbívoros vagueadores são afetados pela profundidade, herbívoros territoriais pela complexidade e pela exposição a ondas, enquanto que planctívoros são afetados pela complexidade do habitat e em menor extensão pela profundidade. Análises de espécies filogeneticamente relacionadas sugerem que ocorre partição de nicho, aparentemente mediada pela capacidade de natação em resposta ao grande dinamismo que ocorre nas zonas rasas. A água fria oriunda de eventos de reesurgência foi um fator de redução da abundância e número de espécies capazes de extender sua distribuição batimétrica para as zonas mais fundas, desencadeando respostas comportamentais específicas em algumas espécies como a formação de densos cardumes na camada superficial durante os eventos de ressurgência. Herbívoros vagueadores e onívoros foram os grupos tróficos que foram particularmente afetados pela intrusão de água fria.
