Dominique Givord
Doctorate in Physics from Université Joseph-Fourier , Grenoble, France (1973) and post-doc at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA). Physicist at the ILL, the neutron European source (1976-1979), director of Laboratoire Louis Néel, Grenoble (CNRS) (1992-2000), director of Laboratoire National des Champs Magnétiques Pulsés (CNRS, Universités de Toulouse). Presently visiting professor in the Institute of Physics of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
Former chairman of the International Advisory Committee of Joint European Magnetic Symposia. Former editor of Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials.
Involved in Magnetism Research, working on the following topics: nanomagnetism and nanomaterials (onset of magnetism in clusters, exchange-bias effects, bio-applications), nanomaterials for spintronics applications, magnetization processes and coercivity mechanisms, functional magnetic materials, in particular hard magnetic materials.

ETAM TAMRS, Descrição: Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) and Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR) are the two most important phenomena exploited in Spintronics, the field of electronics which exploits the electron spin. A specific constraint common to GMR and TMR devices is the need of two specific magnetic elements, of which magnetic moments can be made parallel or antiparallel in some controlled manner. The larger magnetoresistance generally found in TMR devices compared to GMR ones is due to the fact that tunneling depends critically on hybridization between states in the metal on one side and in the barrier on the other. One can think of a new device in which the resistance variation would result from the change in the tunnel resistance across a barrier resulting from the rotation of the moment in a magnetic element, under the effect of the Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC). This is Tunnel Anisotropic Magnetoresistance (TAMR). TAMR requires one magnetic electrode only. This opens the way to exploring a number of new materials for spintronic devices. The first general objective of ETAM TAMR is to progress in the understanding of TAMR. One of the key questions to be answered is whether noncrystalline TAMR (depending on the direction of the moment with respect to the current, independent of the crystal structure) dominates crystalline TAMR (dependent on the orientation of the current and/or the moments within the crystal structure). A systematic experimental study in model FePt and CoPt films will be realized (temperature and angular dependence in particular). One will consider as well the dependence of TAMR on the nature of the insulating barrier. The experimental results will be compared to theoretical predictions based on first-principle tight-binding electronic structure calculations and using the two-channel version of Landauer-Bütttiker theory of transport. Model calculations will permit varying independently the microscopic parameters. The application of E-fields to actuate a magnetic response is not widespread. For metallic systems, there are very limited experimental [15, 16] and theoretical studies [17-20]. Most research has focused on multiferroic [21-23] or dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) materials [24- 26] where observed phenomena often involve low TC materials. Metallic systems have the potential to move these phenomena to room temperature and above. The new research program outline here will address the control at room temperature of the intrinsic magnetic properties of transition metals and their alloys and compounds. All studied systems will be chosen such that they magnetically order near or above room temperature. Because these materials are conducting, the E-field (and its effect on magnetism) manifests itself via charging effects, which are confined to the near surface region; therefore this research will focus on thin films and heterostructured devices where the surfaces can dramatically affect the magnetic properties. The 2 main goals will be to: (i) Systematically investigate the E-field effects on the magnetic properties (anisotropy, ordering temperature, exchange bias) of transition-metal films and the coupling at magnetic-oxide/metal interfaces. (ii) Use E-field control of magnetism and spintronic phenomena in integrated 3 terminal devices.
