Lurian Pires Klein

Lurian Klein holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the State University of Maringa ? Brazil. In 2013, he was awarded with a nationwide scholarship, granted by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (i.e. CNPq), to study abroad at the University of Melbourne ? Australia. Whilst undertaking subjects from the Master of Environment programme, he strengthened his expertise in urban design, ecological design, sustainable energy systems and community planning/engagement. Lurian Klein also authored a book about the Pantanal biome on behalf of the UNESCO Observatory on Multidisciplinary Research in the Arts, aimed at English language teaching for children at early fluent, fluent and independent reading skills in the international literacy market. The KidzBookHub Global Village Reading Series has established art-based interdisciplinary projects across fourteen countries, of which he is the Brazilian ambassador. He is currently part of the MIT Portugal programme as a PhD student on Sustainable Energy Systems at the University of Coimbra - Portugal. His thesis project focuses on the conceptualisation of Integrated Net-Positive Community Energy Systems with the following main global objectives: (i) to demonstrate the value-adding role that net-positive energy design plays in informing and fomenting the creation of social capital at the community level and, by doing so, (ii) to establish the extent to which net positive energy systems shape the social realm, in the form of shared values in action ? i.e. the communal mindset. In 2016, he joined Virtual Power Solutions S.A. team as Innovation Developer, where he has been involved in the tailoring of several nationwide & European-wide Innovation Action and Demonstration Projects in the fields of Energy Communities, Energy Efficiency, Smart Cities, Smart Grids, Demand-side Management, among others. Since then, he has been furthering his research experience by communicating project findings/results on behalf of VPS in several international scientific venues. His research interests are: Net positive energy systems; Energy communities; Community planning/engagement; Smart grids/cities; Ecological design; Contributive practice; Regenerative design.
