Joana Isabel Figueira Ferrolho
I am a Veterinary Surgeon from Portugal, pursuing a research career on zoonotic and emerging diseases. During my PhD, I am studying the functional genomics of Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Babesia spp. or Ehrlichia spp. interactions towards vaccine development, in collaboration with researchers from Brazil and Spain, as it is in line with my personal and professional interests as a veterinary surgeon and researcher. I am also collaborating in a project that involves the molecular identification of possible infectious agents present in Rhipicephalus bursa ticks collected in different regions and several biotopes in Portugal.
Along the years, my fascination and interest have deeply increased with regard to zoonotic diseases and their impact in human and animal health. What drives my interest is the fact that the study of emerging diseases is always challenging in the way that there is always something new to investigate, especially now with the climate changes interfering with the ecological systems.
I have completed my first Bachelor´s Degree in Nuclear Medicine in Lisbon, Portugal, and spent six years studying Veterinary Science in Coimbra, Portugal, obtaining a second undergraduate degree and a Master s Degree in Veterinary Science. As a result of this degree, I was awarded a prize from Pfizer Animal Health for being the student of the year in my University, which enabled me to undertake an internship with Parasitology lectures and field sample collection, at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA. After I undertook a second Master s Degree, a Master s Degree in Science by Research at the University of Edinburgh The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies completed with distinction in August 2013. For this degree, I was awarded an 18-month scholarship from the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN), as an Early Stage Researcher. The first 6 months were at The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, and the last 12 months were at The Pirbright Institute, Pirbright, UK. The Pirbright Institute is a world leading centre for research and surveillance of animal and zoonotic diseases and it was an amazing laboratory training and learning experience.
