Irene D'Amico

CURRENT POSITIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Irene D?Amico is Full Professor at the Department of Physics of the University of York (UK), leading the Semiconductor Spintronics and Quantum Information Research Group (see http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~ida500/). Her main scientific interests are in condensed matter theory, solid state-based quantum information, and in semiconductor spintronics, both at the fundamental level as well as their device-related applications. She is the Chair of the Departmental Research Committee (?Head of Research?) for the Department of Physics, and a Member of the Department Management Team. In 2014 she has been elected to the Senate of the University of York. She is the Non-Executive Director for Scientific Research Experience within the Board of Director of IOP Publishing, one of the world major publishers for Physics (Oct 2011-Sept 2014). D?Amico is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. RESEARCH D?Amico is internationally recognized for the discovery of the Spin Coulomb Drag effect, a fundamental property relevant to the fields of spin transport and spintronic applications, and her body of work on solid state quantum computation and entanglement. With a background in condensed matter theory, she has stretched across different fields and made high profile contributions to various research areas (e.g. colloidal systems, spintronics, nanoscience and quantum computation). Although less than 14 years have passed since gaining her PhD, she have produced over 100 publications, including invited work (full list at http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~ida500/#pub ). Her work has considerable external recognition as proved by a large number of citations: about 1400 citations according to Web of Science (ResearcherID number A-6639-2013) and 1728 citations according to Google Scholar (data from Dec 2013), of which about 900 are in the last 5 years, with an average of over 100 citations per year in the last 10 years. Her h-index is 20 according to Web of Science and 23 according Google Scholar. This is particularly notable as her first paper was published in 1997. Her research consistently tackles timely and important issues. PRL 81, 1334 (1998) solved a controversial issue on like-charged macro-ions. PRB, 62, 4853 (2000), co-authored with G. Vignale, represents the discovery of the Spin-Coulomb drag (SCD) effect. In 2005, and then 2012, experiments confirmed their predictions (Nature 437, 1330 (2005), Nature Physics 8, 153 (2012)). She has been one of the pioneers in proposing all-optical semiconductor-based quantum computation devices (see e.g. PRB 64, 195320 (2001); PRB 65, 075306 (2002); PRB (Rapid Comm.) 65, 081309 (2002); APL 81, 5213 (2002); EPL 62(2), 175 (2003); and PRB 69, 235316 (2004)). Her work J. Appl. Phys. 101(11), 114319 (2007) on ensemble quantum computation has warranted a press release by the Institute of Physics. Paper PRB 77, 205122 (2008), pioneering the connections between Density Functional Theory (DFT) and entanglement, is rapidly accumulating citations. Paper PRL 106, 050401 (2011) from 2011, introduces a new approach to analyse fundamental quantities in quantum mechanics. Papers PRL 109, 166401 (2012) and PRB (Rapid Comm.) 87, 121303 (2013), related to quantum properties of spin plasmons, featured in the front page of the University of York website and have been press-released because of their importance within the quantum technology field. Due to her strong international reputation, D?Amico has been invited to give more than 75 talks at conferences, workshops, colloquia, and seminars worldwide (A full list can be found at: http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~ida500/#inv). EQUALITY/GENDER EQUALITY: D?Amico has been the Chair of the Department Equality Committee (previously named Gender Equality Committee) from the creation of the committee(s) in 2009, until 2013.
