  The effects of climate change on soil-plant linkages in prairie ecosystems, Descrição: The debatable resilience of prairie systems to climate change in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) is spurring interdisciplinary research on climate change. The projected increase in drought severity (i.e., hotter, drier summers) in the PNW may negatively affect plant productivity, with further implications for beef production. Low-diversity prairies in the PNW, managed as pastures, currently sustain about 1.3 million beef cows and cow-calf production costs are expected to increase to offset drought-induced loss of plant productivity. We investigate patterns and controls of nitrogen fixation and nutrient constraints on plant productivity under climate change, addressing a major challenge for sustainable agriculture in the region. We quantify the impacts of drought and warming on soil carbon-C, nutrient availability and asymbiotic nitrogen fixation (ANF) in high- and low-diversity prairies across a 520-km latitudinal gradient (southern and central OR, and central WA) representing increasingly severe Mediterranean conditions. At each site, soil samples were collected from 3 prairie and 3 pasture plots of each of the treatments: control (ambient), drought (40% precipitation) and heat (+2.5°C, prairies only). Soil N content is generally higher in diverse prairies whereas treatment had no significant effect on soil N across vegetation types or sites. ANF in prairie and pasture soils was affected by treatment differently depending on site. ANF increased nearly twofold due to drought in southern pasture soils, whereas slight suppression was verified in central pastures. ANF in southern prairie soils was suppressed but no change was verified in central prairie soils. While heat increased ANF in southern prairies, a decrease in ANF was found in central prairies.   Collaborative Research: Assessing climate-biosphere linkages using Late Holocene records of climate variability and vegetation dynamics from the Brazilian Amazon and Savanna, Descrição: The response of tropical biomes to past climate change is poorly understood, and is critical to predicting whether the response of vegetation to modern climate change will feedback to dampen or enhance warming. Through an interdisciplinary collaboration, we are developing a framework for reconstructing and understanding climate-biosphere links. The central objective of this proposal is to investigate the role of changes in the South American Summer Monsoon (SASM) intensity on forest-savanna biome shifts that occurred during the Late Holocene. We propose to generate independent, yet co-located records of past climate (speleothems) and vegetation (soil profiles) dynamics from the Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado (savanna), for which existing records are absent.   Asymbiotic nitrogen fixation in tropical ecosystems as affected by land-use change and fire disturbance, Descrição: This research aimed at assessing the role of ANF in disturbed tropical ecosystems through two study cases in distinct Brazilian regions and two laboratory assays, one for each study case. I conducted study in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, assessing the effects of LUC on ANF across a tropical landscape by quantifying ANF and stoichiometry of soils under primary and secondary seasonal semideciduous forests, Brachiaria brizantha pastures and Eucalyptus sp. plantations along the hillslope (summit, backslope and footslope positions). I also assessed the effect of soil fertilization on ANF by manipulating nutrient additions (+N, +P, +N+P) to quantify ANF in soils from the same land use types (summit and footslope positions) as affected by soil nutrient management. The second study was conducted in the southeastern Amazonia, where I assessed the interactions among forest composition, fire, soil physicochemistry and ANF.   Sustainable forest management in central Amazonia: does low-intensity selective logging disturb soil biogeochemistry and litter quality?, Descrição: Despite the assumption of sustainability that underlines the regulation of sustainable forest management plans (SFMPs), there is scarce information about how it affects forest floor and below ground nutrient and carbon stocks vital to forest nutrient cycling. In the oldest logging company in Brazil, Precious Woods Amazon, we measured litter traits and soil biogeochemical parameters in upland (terra firme) forests under SFMP to assess the impacts of low-intensity selective logging operations on soil and litter carbon and nutrient stocks. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) showed low dissimilarity between FTs and control (< 25%), reflecting low impact on litter traits at the logging intensity (12.1 to 19.1 m³ ha-1 yr-1) under SFMP. The most affected litter and soil properties were Ca, Mg, and P availability, which correlated with time since logging (higher values in higher post-logging age).
